Silly intercooler couplers

I was told after the fact that this type of thing isn't all that uncommon:

turned the boost back up on the evos, liberated the pressure, did a quick interstate side reassessment and slight modification, attempted to merge back into traffic with a degree of authority, and promptly merged right back into the emergency lane and retrieved my new aerodynamic ams licp pipe. (have to laugh, what else can you do at that point).

Not people to give up so quickly, myself and my evo's former owner set upon a buddy's shop to remedy the situation. Power had to be put to the ground and by god we were going to do it.

Some tasteful modifications to the ams intercooler and test fitting:

starting to get there (new and improved with 2.5 piping):

I didn't bother getting pics of the final product (it was late, we were tired, I wanted to get the hell home):

The end result still cleared the ducting for the oil cooler, no additional modifications had to be made, it is a little tricky getting the intercooler installed, but nothing serious. Car hauls serious *** at about 22psi. now If I can sort out my xml issue I could actually finish retuning--

This is what I'm up against. not sure the 35r is going to have the lungs to compete.

why would you weld an entire pipe on the intercooler?

yeah if it's permenant why not? it sure keeps it from blowing apart at high boost! Also makes everything a alot sturdier. I actually wouldn't mind having mine welded, with very minimal clamps.

It still comes off just fine. We just made a solid 2.5" pipe from the turbo outlet (which still has a coupler) to the FMIC. Those of you with an AMS 35R kit and AMS FMIC know how funky that transition is from the LICP to the IC inlet on that side, this eliminates that permanently.

We have are running a beta Tephra mod, with all the latest knock system tweaks. The car is only running about 23 psi on pump gas and its a freaking monster compared to before. Shooting for 25-26 on pump.

yeah I know I have the AMS 35R and if you look at the front of the car you can see it hanging down inches from the pavement, it sucks! I'm upgrading now to an AMS 850R I can't wait!!

went ahead and built an upper intercooler pipe (will be available @ go-autoworks.com - no i'm not the owner) today, looks champion.

Car runs like a scalded dog, now I've just got to get the driving down better. not so easy to roll off aggressively with the new clutch, end up just bogging.

the uicp is actually a two piece. there is one 45 degree coupler midway.
If you are interested in the same sorta thing, get ahold of the guy at the url in the images.

Get a Nisei LICP and that will not happen because it has a holding bracket. That bracket puts a nice amount of force on the pipe against the intercooler and combined with T-Bolt clamps it will stay there.
