Leak Down Test- Simple Explanation

These past few days, we've seen a lot of posts regarding leak down tests and the like. I am all for keeping things simple, since it's usually the most simplest things that go wrong. What makes the simple amplify to incredibly difficult is being armed with mis-information, and that is usually not intentional. What may be perceived as a bad situation may not be bad, but quite normal. The difference is whether the consensus is operating off of rational, valid information or just shooting from the hip. I am like you, I like rational, valid information, so I found this explanatory guide.

http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles...ter/index.html

Read it. It's very simple in explanation, and it doesn't matter that Car Craft is an American domestic muscle-oriented publication, for the information is universal.

Have fun

Hopefully, someone will read the article and save themselves a hit in the wallet. I know there are shops out there who are unscrupulous when it comes to things like this and skew the data to read in their favor because not everyone understands leak down tests, and during times like now, we all need to be smarter in many ways.

We use a 100 psi which then makes it very simple to calculate your leakdown loss as a percetage value.

Just read the article. I agree with what they said.

As an example, we did a leak down test on my buddies Buschur motor after about 2 years of abuse at 1.9 bar on crap fuel, running 11.1 on stock IX turbo... leak down was 5% across all 4 cylinders.

I have yet to do a leakdown on my car as compression tests have always read ok and I believe if a compression test reads ok it is probably not worth doing a leakdown. Just my opinion though.
