The main thing i am taking from it is that the bigger housing is keeping it from surgeing. that mainly it

This is probably a stupid question but I happened on the thread so I figured I would ask. Are either FP Red (old vs new) an HTA? I'm assuming not as I haven't seen it mentioned in threads but it could simply be that I am overlooking it as I read.

I'm starting to spec a turbo upgrade and not quite sure which route to take. I saw "new fpred" which caught my attention. Thanks for any info!

If I'm not mistaken all of the Reds have an HTA wheel.

The Red uses the same compressor as the HTA 30R.

At what boost level is surge becoming an issue for people with the "old" Red?

I was thinking they should of made all fp reds ballbearing from the beginnning but the cost would of probably been to high. And people would of just went with hta 35r's

I have had a red with the 60mm inlet and in the process of finishing installing the 80mm inlet comphousing. I used to experience bad surging in fourth gear at 30psi. I hope that this new housing will cure it. I can say from seeing both housing off the turbo the new 80mm housing is superior.
