I have mine at .025

That's what we plan to do as soon as we get the recommended plugs.

If it's the tune, we'll sort it out

If you have a stock car with bolt-ons then there's a good chance it has a different boost profile/behavior so you could be knocking. My car was knocking because my spool changed after putting on exhaust parts without tuning.

Cross reference any brand plug. If it's only for a test, it really won't matter. with bolt-ons and stock boost levels, the stock gap should be fine. I'm still running the stock gap with 23psi, 255FP, TBE and Air filter. no issues here.
Hell, I'll throw a set of champions in it and it will still run fine.

Yeah, that's exactly what I have done... cross-ref'ed, but the thing about this part of the world is that things you take for granted as existing down the street, doesn't really exist here. People in turn will try anything for a workaround, but that only goes so far. The EVO is one machine that doesn't like things other cars like or don't mind. Just waiting for the owner to get paid so we can continue on this interesting odyssey, and in the meantime, I am trying to get smart on this ECUFLASH on my own, because I need to get up on it for my own edification in the event we have to go there. Yes, there is an EVO scene here, but that's another story, and sometimes it's best to go off on one's own and bust up the status quo, especially when the status quo isn't all up on it.

I had the exact same issue with my car. The person i bought the car from had installed Autolite plugs. I replaced the plugs with some NGK's and the car runs like a champ.

I'm running 22psi with alot of bolt ons. I got a tune by 3sx they told me that my fuel injecters were maxed and they couldn't keep up so I've put in a new fuel pump and since then I've been getting back fireing in the topend and alot of rice crakle so I got ngk 1step colder plugs and was thinking about tapping them at .024 and was wondering if anyone has the same problem

They said your injectors were too small and couldn't keep up so you put in a new fuel pump (to increase fuel flow?)... If they are too small, meaning their duty cycle can't keep up with the demand, a new fuel pump, and I am assuming one with higher flow, won't fix the issue. You need injectors with a greater duty cycle and a retune. Your backfiring, and I think you mean detonation at top end is because you are leaning out because your injectors are maxed out. The plugs won't resolve the issue.

Fix your fuel flow problems with the injectors and the new fuel pump and have it retuned to reflect what you have. Running with more boost, look into the meth kit if you are also wanting to run more advanced timing, if you haven't done so already. Colder plugs... work with your tuner on this for a proper balance. Detonation is no friend of anyone and is an engine killer.

you'll find most evo owners run either NGK copper or Iridium plugs. Platinum is almost under heard of, so stay away from it. Lower your gap if you are not running stock boost. adjusting to the right gap is must, don't listen to whatever you read. I listen to people who said you dont need to gap iridium, b/c they're pre gapped and I had lots of breaking up.

Platinum is early 80's tech. Iridium (Ir-77) is the way to go and is 6-8 times more durable. DENSO recommends gapping if the use is for forced induction, so the gap recommendations of .020-.025 I have been told do apply. I suppose you choose the gap that suits your car.

Just cleaning up and closing out threads I started. It was the plugs, for sure. No more hiccups or strangling. Used the recommended copper NGK with .024 gap. Thanks for your help guys
