blown transfer case or not?

Hi, just need some help before I go out and buy a transfer case, just want to make sure what the problem is. Last night I did a launch in the car at about 4500rpm, heard a big bang, now the car won't move when in gear. Makes a shrill metallic noise and moves forward a tiny bit but not much. Noise is faster/higher pitched in higher gears. We opened the inspection plate of the transfer case and the crown wheel looks fine however we couldnt' see the pinion very well. What is confusing though is we dropped the oil and there are no metallic bits to be found, the oil came out a golden brown colour. If not the transfer case what else could it be? Just had a new exedy hyper single put it, could it be something to do with that? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Your story isn't very clear. You say the car doesn't move in gear, but in higher gears the sound you're hearing is faster/higher pitched? I'm assuming you mean that you are trying to move the car by putting it in a gear other than first when all four wheels are on the ground? Remember, you're trying to get a diagnosis over the internet and you have left out A LOT of info about what the car does when you try and operate it.

What happens when you let out the clutch pedal with it in gear? Does it feel like the clutch is grabbing and does the car try and move forward? Can you let the clutch pedal out all the way with it in gear and the car doesn't stall or move? Have you put the car on jack stands and checked to see what wheels move? Where do you think the noise is coming from?

sounds like it's coming from the clutch, so when the car is put in gear and the clutch released the car will only inch forward a tiny bit and makes a metallic noise, when put in a higher gear it still doesn't move or stall however the noise gets faster. we have taken the car off the ground and the wheels move a little bit, not enough to move the car though. The car can also go into gear with the clutch pedal not depressed. this is for a friend by the way. we dropped the gearbox oil also and no metal bits to be found.

Your clutch is toast. Take the trans out and see how bad it is.

The engine runs so it is okay. The car shifts into gear and makes various sounds so the clutch and transmission are okay. That leaves a busted center differential.
