problems with my new shep trans install
Great, now there is a thread with the name "new shep tranny sux!?!?!" and it might not even be the tranny. Newbs will read that and not the whole thread where the issue was found. Its most likely the clutch or one of the shields mentioned earlier. My god sometimes people dont think ahead now Shep will have to spend hours answering PM's, email and phone calls about this instead of working his magic on trannys in his shop.
OP, yes it is okay to ask the community what the problem might be but next time dont put "new shep tranny sux!?!?!" unless you have proof and tried your best to remedy with the vendor.
Rant over. JL

No no no, I'm not bAshing shep at all. I've called them and they couldn't tell me. So now I'm Âsking if anybody has had a similar problem. The clutch was tested and checked before install and I used redline mt 90 I think, or whatever it was that shep sent me.... Its definitely coming from the tranny tho

OP
i'll join in, as the 4th person asking, what kind of clutch are you running? twin plate clutch? unsprung disk? carbon clutch?
i've had broken gears in customers trannys before, and the noise it makes is a clunking sound every time the gear spins (and only happened when the gear was spinning, i.e. driving forward). if your hearing a rattle at idle, and not moving, it cannot be the output side of the tranny because that side is not moving. the only moving part in the tranny is the input side when idling, and thats only assuming the car is in neutral with the clutch pedal out. if you press the clutch in, nothing in the tranny will be moving (so if your hearing a rattle at idle with the car in gear and clutch pedal depressed, its NOT the tranny.
here are some other suggestions:
1. the metal plate between the flywheel and engine block could be missing the bolts that hold it to the block. could cause a vibration sound of metal on metal.
2. downpipe hitting subframe supports (very common, especially at idle)
3. head shields around driveshaft and exhaust
4. front or rear or side motor mount not tight. this would make a clunking sound in hard accel or decel.
5. and of course, the clutch can be chattering. ESPECIALLY if you have a twin.

I'm a newb....I read it and was like "WOW"! this is like the first time i have seen a thread that put down Shep. It didn't stop me from sending Shep my tranny & transfer case .
now, once again, i am not bashing shep at all! if you read the title, it was a question, NOT a statement. now, i have checked over EVERYTHING and like i said, i have done this many times before.
sooooooo, it is NOT a sheild, or anything like that. i used an automotive stethoscope on the tranny and that is where the sound is comming from.....
its a exedy clutch single disc

it is an exedy hd pressure plate with a ceramic/ kevlar SPRUNG disk. and it was tested and checked before hand,
sorry for the delay on clutch details, i was in class.
A lot of technical experts have already chimed in... just saying "it can't be that, I've done this many times before" isn't going to get you anywhere closer to solving this problem.
Possible problem areas include:
1) clutch
2) pressure plate
3) some shield that was mentioned above
4) throw out bearing
Only way to eliminate them for sure, is to change them out.
Have you even contacted Shep for any possible advice?
