blown motor please read, (its not a story)

hi all, i blew my motor yesterday. well after calling the insurance company and having the car taken to my house i got to work pulling the turbo off the car to see if there was any kind of turbo failure ( its an hta35r, and there wasn't, the turbo has no shaft play and spins freely)

after removing the exhaust manifold i saw that the exhaust port on the head above cylinder 1 was sopping wet with oil.

so the next idea i had was to take my valve cover off to see if my cams were alright (kelford 272's and they were fine)

the next idea i had was to take a look at the spark plugs out and examine them to look for other signs of detonation. the spark plug for cylinder 1 was melted.

im about to remove the head from the motor to get a better look at the top of the piston.

if the cylinder looks alright I will fully inspect and clean the head and replace all valvetrain components before re-installing the head.

another concern of mine is that the timing belt feels a bit loose, but it could just be a bad tensioner, i plan on checking the auto tensioner for failure.

does anyone see anything wrong with my logic here?

Im confused...you said the exhaust port is soaked with oil. Do you see oil coming out anywhere else or only in the head? Itll be interesting to see what you find when you pull the head.

Maybe a cracked piston and oil coming past the ringlets hence oil in the exhaust port...

They certainly won't cover mechanical failure. Oil coming out of an exhaust port usually means a bad piston and or ring. Have you done a compression test?

no my ensurance company wont cover the motor, what i meant by that is they towed me back to the house and im ok.

i have the valve-train out of the head, the only thing still in there is the springs and retainers and from what i can remember those can stay put when removing the head.

i have hit a snag though, when the ARP headstuds where installed they were put in with a damn air gun and all i have is my socket set. i know i have to be careful. but do these studs unscrew clockwise or counter-clockwise?

no oil coming from anywhere else. just the exhaust port on the head for cylinder #1

and i seriously doubt its a cracked piston...

im going to have to take the damn intake manifold out with the head all at once...

umm... that just doesnt sound right.

also, why dont you think the piston could be cracked? hopefully its the rings, but the piston could be cracked. you gotta take the head off.

well im not ruling it out, its definately possible. but remember the spark plug was melted so it could just be a gas and oil mixture from the cylinder not firing.

which way should i unscrew these head studs?
