Evo 9 Timing Belt

Hi, First post here hope its in the right place. I just bought a wrecked evo 9 with 17,000 miles. After checking all fluids and making sure to start it I attempted to start it and all i got was a lond whinning noise. Turned out that only the crankshaft(it think) was turning but the top was not. So I took the timing belt cover off and the timing belt was broken/ripped in one place. Question I have is why would the timing belt break so early? There is no damage to the motor, or any other parts around the motor. Is there anything else I should look at before I start to replace the timing belt? Thanks everyone.

If the belt is broken, I'd bet money you have a pretty f'd up head since the valves and pistons probably had a little get together. I'd pump some air into the spark plug holes to see if the valves still seal, and if not, its time to take the head off to get repaired.

How would I know the valves are sealing. I know to do a lot of general mechanic work on my car, but anything internal is pretty much unknown territory. Thanks

Put a new belt on correctly, and do a compression test. But if it's broken, and you cranked it over, your valves are ****ed. Gonna have to pull the head at a minimum to repair the obvious. Good luck.

The biggest thing is I don't know the past, the guy that sold me the car will not return my calls . When I tried to start the car the two gears on the top, the cams (I think) did not even turn over. Not sure if that is because they might be blown to hell, or because the timing belt is to loose. Anyone know how much would a head job, and timing belt run me in Southern California?

The phrase "bit off more than you can chew" comes to mind. Its expensive friend. Look around for a used motor to bolt in. Then build your head back up while your motors out. Have fun at the machine shop.

Painfully true it seems, any idea what a good shop is in Southern California for this?
