Proper Mivec Timing Marks 2.4L

Im currently replacing the timing belt in my 4g64 mivec motor and i cannot get the marks perfectly align for the life of me. with the old belt it was perfectly fine, with this new gates belt for a 4g63 it has slack or once you start to tighten the tension pulley it moves the crank from its timing mark.

Im not sure what i am doing incorrectly but here is how i place the marks on the cam gears.

All help would be greatly appreciated

Um, why are you advancing the exhaust cam?

I believe you have to retard it about 3.75°. Which from where you're at now, is about a whole tooth counterclockwise on that cam

Spot on Anarchy99. You need to go the other direction 3.75°

You are both backwards. The gear rolls forward for retard then when the mark lines up on the valvecover the cam has rolled back counter clockwise (which you said). It is correct as is.

That is incorrect information for the Fidanza gear that he is using. The cam is attached to the CENTER hub which slides counter clockwise for retard.

You have referenced what appears to be a honda AEM cam gear and I'm pretty sure that engine spins backward compared to an Evo.

I pulled an AEM cam gear out of the box and its set up exactly like the picture I grabbed for reference. I will go see if I can find a Fidanza around here.

Edit- I see what you mean now. Yeah its backwards on the fidanza some how. On the AEM the gear rolls forward for retard.

Anarchy might have a point about the fidanza cam gear. after drawing this fancy picture here im sure we can all agree that the fidanza cam gear sucks compared to all the others out there. Not only do they mislabel the dowel pin hole but they place the numbers totally different from all the others and do not even provide you with a A or R so you know what your setting it to.

Im just surprised that the car ran like this before.

here is a picture to help others that might have a similar problem

AEM writes the info in a different place that moves. What moves on the fidanza is the "mark".

I love Fidanzas and have no problems with them. I do not believe they are off on their dowel holes either as I have overset a set of stock gears and when you use the correct dowel hole, they are either on the mark or one tooth off on the DSM hole like they are supposed to be.

the cam gear it self is not cheap quality but they should have taken the time to label things alot better. But i reset it today and install it back on,turn over by hand and nothing seems to hit, i will be firing it up tonight and see what happens

What are you doing with the Mivec Side? It looks like where you timed it may not allow the cam gear to zero out. (aka full retard)

It is actually a tooth retarded so it loses advance if it hasnt been modified and picks up additional retard out the top.

To make another point ... The fidanza gears on the evo dowel are one degree off as well...

which way do you all time the MIVEC intake cam? I modified it, do I move it a tooth towards the radiator or a tooth back towards the firewall?
