Is that whining noise from the turbo or tranny??

I'm hearing a whining noise that almost sounded like a electric
whine...
It happens decelerate or accelerate... it's not really loud that I
really dont remember having it before... I can hear it best right
below 3k rpm since beyond 3k all I can hear is air induction,
exhaust and turbo spooling (that whistling noise)...

I have 1200 miles.. no major mods except

cusco oil catch can,
blitz dtt turbo timer,
grounding wires...

It's not from the turbo. That would be a boost-dependent problem and wouldn't happen on decel (unless your turbo was totally screwed up, in which case it wouldn't be making any boost anyway).

If it's an electrical noise, it could very well be your fuel pump that you're now noticing. My stocker was loud as hell, though I had it rewired with 9 gauge amp wire. See if you can hear it at idle and then do something like turn the blinker on or something. The change in voltage will change the pitch of the noise.

I do hear something at idle... but i'm not sure if it's the same
noise...

The one at idle sounds like a humming noise (also electric
sounding) coming from under the car.....

This is not a boost/electrical problem. It's the gear teeth meshing together in the transmission. I love it personally, sounds like a damn dogbox. It's particularly noticeable through 3rd gear.

It's normal, just enjoy, these cars make lots of noises.

Ya... I think I've heard it before too... but I just, for some reason,
notice it more now... It is coming from the front of the car... and
I'm going to check if I can hear it blipping at idle (tranny shouldn't
move during idle right??)

Thanks webguy330i

The tranny won't be moving but the clutch will. Could be a clutch problem if that's the case. Otherwise, if it is gear whine, yeah... get used to it.

The fuel pump should be under the rear seat. Take out the bottom cushion and you'll see a rubber grommet-type thing. That's the wiring to the pump. It would probably be loud enough with the cushion off and your ear close to it that you can hear it to identify whether or not it was a sound that you thought you heard.

This is how I rewired my fuel pump. I just happened to already have the 9 gauge stereo wire already run back there from the amp I had in there, which I decided to take out anyway.

webguy,

You were not describing the rattling noise on deceleration right?..
(which sounded like something is rattling...)
This whining noise actually sounds louder on acceleration..
(and somewhat a higher pitch whine/noise)

No the decel noise is totally different, I attribute that to driveline lash in the transfer case.

The noise you are talking about is definitely more on accel, 1st gear it's just LOUD.

Watch any rally video from an in-car view and listen to that thing scream, oooooh yeah.

webguy is right. It is perfectly normal. It is very common in a strong gearbox to hear noises like that. Crawl along in first gear and the whine is very noticeable.

Thanks guys!!..

But just one more thing... friend of mine told me that eclipse
transfer case were recall earlier due to fluid leaks and that the
trans case whines when low on fluids...

I'll try to check the fluid level asap..

JT there's no Evo recall for that and your trans case is supposed to be full from the factory. Mine was overfilled actually, not a bad thing IMO. Don't worry about it until you change the fluid.

Guys... I drove around tonight and tried different things...
It turns out that the whining is also there when I rev it
during idle...

I had a friend to check the source of the whine while I rev the
engine inside the car... He told me that the noise seems to come
from either the tranny or alternator??? But the tranny is not
spinning at idle right??

I recorded using my digital camera... here's the video...
(ignore the bad lighting.. )
Note that in the video is pointing toward dipstick... under it should
be the alternator?? then under that is the tranny, i assume.

Could anyone host the file?

Email it to me bro, I'll post it up. spambox@330i.net

It could be the power steering pump you're hearing, I'll see what I can tell from the vid.
