Look i've come to realize the TRE will never have the gearset out. Not only that, but if they did have it out, you wouldn't be able to get ahold of him to get it put in. Ya sure if your a friend or a relitive you could, but since i'm neither....and i have a 6sp MR tranny.... i guess i have to do the swap to a 5ver.

Depends how much power your planning on throwing at it. Oil coolers help yes, but the problem is that the gears are crammed in the same size housing as a 5sp, so inherently there thinner and weaker. Oil coolers will help prolong the inevitable (if your running big power) rule of thumb; you should be safe running under 350WHP.

There are straight cut gears offer by Quaife but its not a 6speed gear set. It's a 5speed straight cut gear set that fits inside the 6speed transmission case.

There are straight cut gears available for the 6 speed too. Just found this out today from a guy at a Nissan shop called Specialty Z

Might be a lot of gear whine for us daily driver folks, though.

Don't know. You'd have to contact them and I didn't want to waste their time. Feel free though to click on that option, though

And what experience do you have with the MR transmission?

I have a 9 MR, with a six speed. Converting to a 5sp, if you have to swap the gears why not make it stronger. It's a good trans for "lower power level" evo's but they don't hold the power. If you don't believe me start pushing 450+ whp and see how long your 3-4th last.

I've been down that route of looking for gear sets, you know what a Quaife gear set is worth? it's like 6k, 6 ****ing grand + for what? so you can keep the 6th speed in your trans (ok theirs more to a dog engagement box then that, but it's not the point) most of the other guys won’t be far off. IF you have 6k to through at a trans then by all means, but to me I’d rather spend that on a bigger turbo set up.

IMO Shep trans, good for 650WHP get duel syncros on 1st and 2nd your good to go/.

^

Yeah I think its more a matter of who is doing the driving. You drive like an idiot, your stuff is going to break no matter which trans you have.

The transmission is not power limited its the torque that hurts it. Powerwise is also not what the downfall is on the MR. Many have drag raced it no problems, good amount even in the 10's. 1-3rd are actually thicker and stronger than that of the 5sp. 4th is the weakest then 5th and 6th. 95% of failures have resulted in overheating it on the track and losing 4th. Half of those failures were from people running crap fluid or the wrong viscosity. Good fluid such as the Amsoil MTG or Motul Gear 300 work great in the MR as thats what I use and am still going strong at 43k miles and plenty of track events with over 350whp. Yes its inevitable once you start doing serious road racing and have lots of power. A good tranny cooler will help and smart driving makes a difference. For 90% of the people on this site its fine...probably is the few that have had problems make it sound like its widespread plague of how bad the tranny is. Same thing goes for the GTR and many other cars.

Also take what you read with a grain of salt because half the people on this site get their statements from a friends friends dogs uncle cousins mechanic. Most have no experience with what they babble about. Find out what your goals are realistically and go from there.
