just got my block back from the machine shop... about to assemble it, but i have to file the rings but i dont know the clearance (its .020 over ams spec ross pistons) and i also need to know the ring placement.

i know there is a tourqe spec thread for engine assembely but im having a hard time finding it...

the crank was clearaned by the machine shop... so no need for plasti-gauge... except the rod bearings...

any info would be great...thanks..

i understand thats the whole idea , just wanted to know if there was a more in depth explanation ... i found nothing at the ROSS website .

 

There are a few different ways of placing gaps. This way has always worked well for me.

Looking down on the piston top with the exhaust side toward your chest, place the oil expander ring gap at 7:30, the lower oil ring gap at 4:30, upper oil ring gap at 10:30, 2nd ring gap at 4:30, and top ring gap at 10:30. Also make sure that the oil expander ring is placed so that the ends are point down.

As long as your criss crossing from the inside, and go in steps starting with 20-30 ft lbs, then finish to what ARP says, you'll be golden.

 

What did you make the ptw clearance, and what about the rod and main clearances. Gotta check them out, make sure the machine shop did a good job with them or the motor might not run very well.

 

i imagine by PTW you are talking about piston to wall clearance , idk? i'll let you know after i mic & dial bore it tomorrow as for the machine work , i had the mains line honed ... i wad told no need to plasi-gauge the mains because he already had to clearance them ... just the rods must be clearanced ...

 

I had a machine shop tell me one time my ptw was correct, it was half of what it should have been. Always check clearances!!!

 

Sorry, yesterday was a long day. I should've gotten further into it like...
With timing belt to your left, I usually do No.1 [top] ring at 1:30 and No. 2 ring at 7:30. Oil upper side rail at 10:30 and lower at 4:30, spacer gap at 7:30. This is per the service manual and has always worked for me.

Mitsu specs are:
Ring gaps:
No. 1 is .0079 - .0118"
No. 2 is .0128 - .0197"
Oil is .0039 - .0157"

Piston to wall is .0008 - .0016"


My specs are:
Ross, Wiesco, JE and higher boost (30-40psi) - .020" top and .024" second ring. Oil ring at .016".

Piston to wall - .004"
