Stripped Oil Pump Screw, help please

So I was able to strip this philips screw out (circled in red) now what? Do I try to get a tap in there? Just drill it out?

If you know of someone with a welder, they can tack a small "bar" onto it and you can use that to turn the screw and get it out. Really, that is your only option other than *trying* to drill it out, but with the surrounding metal being aluminum, your chances of butchering it are great.

Take it to a shop with a welder and have them tack a small piece of metal to the top of the screw, and use that to turn the screw.

Has this happen to me, took it to a place and they charged me $20 to do it.

If the hole is stripped you could try and retap it but the results may be questionable. A helicoil or that Permatex epoxy thread repair may work too.

A little hint...a 1/4" thread is about .02" larger than M6. You can cheat and tap it for 1/4-20...you may just get lucky...

Edit: Yeah if you broke it the above method works. A nice sharp drill bit will work if you have a drill press. Use a center punch and start with a smaller bit.
But first, using a center punch, make a divot on the side of the thread and gently tap in a counter clockwise direction. Sometimes that frees things up to the point where you can just hand thread it back out. May work in a location like that, doesn't work so well for broken exhaust studs.

I'm not following...is the head of the screw stripped or the threads in the hole?

I had to use a impact screw driver to get mine out. If I had that happen to me I think I would buy a new pump if at all possible. It will save you all the trouble of getting that screw out and you can sleep at night knowing you have a new pump.

Oh!
A: Get a cut off wheel (be careful of debris) and make a notch for a large flathead in it.
B: Drill the head out and remove the leftover stud with pliers.
C: Buy a new one!

There are tools you can used to removed stripped heads...I believe Snap-on and Craftsman sell them. FYI, when you remove this screw, find the exact size phillips head, then give it a few taps on the end of the screw driver to help break it loose. Then remove as normal. It's easy to strip it.

Its going to be a pain in the ***.. I would try to find someone to weld a bar the screw shouldnt be in that tight like a big bolt... Vice grip the bar and then turn...
