possible C.V. boot or axel damage ?
I hit an uneven paved road on the street about a month ago at 45mph and like 1 min later I started hearing these clunking noises when I slow down in gears or let off the throttle. When I make right or left turns the noise does not occur, only when going straight. I took it to the dealership and they couldn't see anything visually and they said they would have to do a tear down of the car. I am going after the city for this but I am also thinking of taking it in for warrantee instead. If anybody can tell me what the problem maybe I would gladly appreciate it. THX in advance!
clunking can be a sign of cv joint failure. you should hear it especially in hard turning but you may hear during normal driving too. to confirm you should visually inspect the axles, rubber boots and the green cv joint casing for physical damage and leaking axle grease. this will be something you definitely want covered under waranty since axle half shafts can be $500-600 A PIECE. i had the pleasure of replacing them recently..
How many miles do you have on your car? I had the same noise on straight line driving and it was the wheel bearing. It did not show up on turns only because the weight of the car loading the bearings laterally kept it quiet.
I had my mechanic check the wheel bearing at first and he saw nothing wrong with it. Since I get paranoid and track my car I decided to replace it anyway. Once they took it off it was basically split in half and the only thing holding it together was the axle nut.
