cam tests

It's for a DSM, but you can read it and adjust accordingly. Also, try to balance out a bit from the mods on the testbed car. DSM'ers already know some of the cams did overworked the TC on the top end of the rpm.

HKS cams are the best for a 4G63 motor hands down.

too hard on stock valvetrain, and no idle without spending more money.

260 degree duration; 10.0 lift.
Do NOT use JUN 272's without upgraded valvetrain. We have that available as well.

Does anyone know about the idle on the 264's? I want this to be one of my next mods.

I have 264/264 cams. Idle is not stock smooth, but it nearly is. Not a problem at all.

Randell's car pulls pretty hard. I leave it up to him to give his impressions on everything, but I must say it's a pretty powerful EVO; especially considering the margins of safety we put into his tune.

FYI, regarding 264's; it should idle fine. It will be slightly noticeable from the exhaust note with an aftermarket turboback. The stock computer will have almost zero problems, although you will have a slight burble or whatnot every once in a while. Randell's car has a special turboback with high flow O2 housing AND a manifold with big injectors so his car sounds pretty mean at idle.

Hi Chris,
You got the name right. It must be fun having both an Evo and STI to drive and compare. With the cams and fmic, along with the exhaust and manifold I was hitting fuel cut at 18 psi. Mark suggested larger injectors to solve this. We installed 785's along with Pruvens fuel pressure regulator and gauge. Mark used the e-manage and wideband to tune both the idle and high boost. When we did the cams we did head studs and the larger fuel rail and fuel pump. I now have set low boost at 19psi and high boost at 21-22 psi. The higher rpms at 22 are a serious hard pull. The car is smooth throughout the rev range, Mark figures 330 whp. I love it, and it sounds great.

I would be really interesting to see a cam comparison with an upgraded turbo. Good info, though!

Al has done some testing along with others. The HKS 272's will make more than the 264's in that case. The JUN 272's make even more than the HKS 272's however they are tough to idle with stock ECU (maybe a reflash can solve this, but I doubt it since Al has Dynoflash access). The JUN's are really for very high rpm power (beyond stock rev limit). Al said he was going to try the JUN 264's. I have 272's in my own 3037S powered car. I have the head coming back soon from a QR Stage 4+ plus bigger valves, bigger sheet metal manifold, etc. I am going to give the Tomei Procams a shot (higher lift than even JUN). I think the high duration isn't where it's at. It really wants more LIFT and try to avoid excessive overlap or early opening of the valves.

I just got an used Tomei system 1 ECU, I can really feel it quicker and more responsive(compared to the Ralliart ECU).
Tomei sys 1 ECU can be used alone or with the Poncam(in 260 10.7, ex 260 10.2) which susposed to idel like stock and need no further mod. I just want a light tune evo, so this cam sounds good.

Right.
To clarify for others; Tomei has a Poncam and a Procam. Those names aren't typos. The Poncam is a lighter cam and the Procam requires some valvetrain upgrades.
