Hey guys,

Has anyone removed the heat shield that's under the wire mesh so that only the wire mesh is left? I was hoping this would help extract more heat w/out causing negative effects. Has anyone else done this?

 

yea man, every track event i have i take that crap off, you can see the diffrence in heat transfer- the " heat waves" that come out are like 40 percent more with that crap off +1

my opinion, i think the sheild is manley for water flow- not to hit directly into the bay

I don't think that "shield" is for water flow at all. It would only move the water an inch from where it fell. Take a look at it. I'm pretty sure it is for directing air (to be pulled out from the engine bay) when you are moving...

 

funny you should ask. because I was looking for something that completely blanks it off for when I can't park the car in the car and it's raining outside

 

just get a rubber mat and cut it out to shape so you can pull it out the trunk and slap it on.

 

I see what you mean, but I think he might be right, the slats overlap each other and they are angled so its like the water cascades down to the very end and onto the radiator as opposed to onto the engine. when I go wash the car the engine does get a bit wet but no way near how wet it will get with it completely off like this.

Some cars have reverse vents and as the air flows over it it gets sucked into the bay like my CF chargespeed hood, I think the OEM design has to do with mixing heat extraction and water protection.


edit* scratch that, i went and had a proper look at it and what you said seems right... so what do you figure, better to keep it on?

I believe the shield is designed so that when high pressure runs over the hood it draws the heat out of the engine bay. I would advise leaving it in.

 

No shield since 05. And it rains all the time in the NE. No issues you'll be fine man

I've also had mine removed for 3 years now. Although I do not drive the car in the rain, it is amazing how much more heat is escaping the engine bay, most noticably when at a stop.
