Anyone? Issues with 5th gear synchro, Evo IX?
Anyone else have issues with the 5th gear synchro for the Evo IX?
EVO IX Special Edition 5-Speed.
Grinding going into 5th on acceleration at higher RPMs (3500 RPM and up)
I know there was a TSB for the 2003 VIII about this issue.
I'm wondering if they resolved the issue for the 2004+ EVos or just used the left over transmissions for the later models without replacing the defective parts?
The car is at the stealership right now. The car is still under factory warranty but because I have no service records (performed all service myself) they are giving me a hard time. Making me authorize a tare down and signing over $1600.00 to start so they can inspect the transmission.
Is this standard procedure? I told the Service Manager that I have a feeling if I had service records we would not be having this discussion about tare downs. He said it's standard procedure whether or not a customer has service records or not, to request authorization for a tare down in order to inspect the transmission.
I need some ammo please!

Thanks
P.S. I did do searches on the forum but mainly found issues reported for the 2003 Evo VIII

Mine just went on my evo 8 sorry to hear about yours...I wanted a shep trans so this was perfect excuse so I did it...Car is still at CBRD waiting for the trans but I have a feeling its gonna be well worth it...and for $1600 you could get a shop to take the trans out ship it to shep and get a basic rebuild for a little over $1400...GOOD LUCK

Warranty should be paying for all diagnostic, inspection, tear down, and rebuild costs. You shouldn't have to put any money down. Everyone I know owns an 03, 04, or 05 Evo. Only 1 is an Mr. I haven't heard of any problems with the syncro except the 03's. It does sound like a syncro problem to me though. Good luck.
How many miles are on the car?

Sorry no ammo, but I also had the 5th gear syncro issue for my ix transmission. It started with mostly grinding in high rpm shift then it was grinding every time I shift quickly into 5th. But if I shifted like a granny it would go in without griding.
My solution was getting Evo 8 transmission with Evo 9 1st gear and Street/Strip build from Sheptrans. I then sent back my transmission for core credit.
I did not bother going to get it warrentied because of modifications in my sig.

When cold going from 1st - 2nd I get a wee crunch every so often.
On the track I have found Ive gone for 5th a couple of times and get the horrible crunch and refused to go in. Sadly it seems to be common in the 6 speed box

Thanks guys.
The car has 44k miles.
hypnotiq9000:
The warranty states the following:
Receipts covering the performance of maintenance ser-
vices should be retained in the event questions arise con-
cerning maintenance. These receipts should be transferred
to each subsequent owner of this vehicle. MMNA reserves
the right to deny warranty coverage if the vehicle has not
been properly maintained. However, denial will not be
based solely on the absence of maintenance records.
So, I do have that on my side...

Find another dealer... Or build your transmission... Ive had an 8 and 9 both having issues w syncros... The dealer only fixes the syncro thats bad, instead of rebuilding the whole tranny. Your choice though.. only service record that would be needed for the transmission would be an oil change on it at some point.

Update:
Thanks all.
For all those that are interested:
I will be updating this thread with my experience with Capital Mitsubishi in San Jose CA
11-9-09 Took car in to Capital Mitsubishi at 8:30 am Upon
questioning of Service Records, I inform Sal that I do not have Service
Records and that I do all the services myself. Sal comments that they
need service records. Mitsu rep requires service records. I tell him
that I do not have records.
11-9-09 Call to Sal at 2:37 to check progress. Informed me that he
will need service records and if I have service records to provide those.
I told him that I might have receipts for the fluids I bought and will get
back to him.
11-9-09 Received call from Sal at 2:51 to inform me that the Mitsu
Rep requests Service Records from me. Reminded Sal that I do not
have Service Records. I inform Sal that I do not have receipts. Sal
informs me that he will call Mitsu Rep and tell them that I have no
service records, again he says It will be easier to have warranty
coverage with service records.
11-9-09 Call to Sal at 3:28 to check back on progress with Mitsu Rep.
Sal says he does not have information yet. Again he says It will be
easier to have warranty coverage with service records. Sal requests
service records. I remind Sal that I do all the service myself and do not
have service records.
11-10-09 Call to Sal at 9:32 to check progress with Mitsu Rep..
Informs me that he will call me before 2pm with an answer from Mitsu
Rep.
11-10-09 Placed Call to Sal at 1:58 to check progress. Informs me
that it is not yet 2pm and he will call Mitsu Rep and get an answer for
me in 10 minutes.
11-10-09 Received call from Sal at 2:13 We spoke for 18 minutes..
Informs me that the Mitsu Rep. wants Service Records. I explained to
him that I do not have records and will not provide records, will not
make up records either (as I suspect he may be trying to get me to do
because he keeps asking over and over again
for records that don't exist). I explained to Sal that he can run a test
on the fluid in the transaxle and look at the amount of shavings on the
drain plug and should be able to determine that the fluid is neither brand
new nor "too old" that I changed the fluids at 28500 miles with the
correct fluids. I inform Sal that I have changed timing belts before so
changing fluid is a no brainer for me and that in today's economy I
refuse to pay a Dealer $700 for something I can do myself for less than
50 dollars and a few hours. Sal agrees but also says that during the
Scheduled service they can check for things like the problem with my
car and take care of those issues. I tell Sal that there is nothing covered
under those Services that could tip them off of futur failure of a 5th gear
synchro. Sal says he is on my side. And doesn't care where the money
comes from if it is from Mitsu or me. Makes no difference, although he
would rather see it not come from me. Sal informs me that he will need
to tare down the transmission to determine warranty vailidity. I tell him
that I don't think this is necessary as the only question that anyone has
of me is if I have service records and if I had service records we would
probably not be having this conversation about tare downs. Sal
requests that I authorize the tare down of the transmission and $1600
for labor plus tax. and if he finds out from the inspection that warranty
covers the transmission then I will pay nothing, or maybe a comprimise
where I pay only for only labor or for parts. I tell him that Mitsubishi
will have to deny or grant me my warranty now, and that I do not want
my transmission torn apart until my warranty coverage is validated.
Again I explain to him how he may inspect the fluid and determine if the
fluid is correct and of the right age. Sal informs me that they cannot
proceed without my authorization to do a tare down of the
transmission. He also states that this is standard procedure regardless
of whether or not a customer has service records. He tells me several
positive stories of customers that have been in the same situation as
myself. He says he can tell that I'm the type of person that takes good
care of my car, so the only question is how did the previous owner
service the car. I remind Sal that I received the car at 18k miles and
that the only recommended service before that time that has anything to
do with the transmission is the 15k service and the recommendation is
to "check fluid". Changing the fluid is not recommended until 30k miles.
I also reminded Sal that I changed the fluids myself about 15k miles
ago. Sal says he will need to tare down the transmission to determine if
it is covered under warranty.
11-11-09 1:24pm Placed Call to Mitsubishi to check on progress,
spoke with Sal. He will have information for me
tomorrow before 2pm as there are a few cars ahead of mine.
11-12-09 11:03am I place a call to Sal to check up on progress. He
says to call back in a half hour for information.
11-12-09 11:39am Sal informs me that the issue will not be covered
under warranty because of the following: "The fluids are dirty, and I
have no service records." I told him this is unacceptable for various
reasons. Sal continues to interrupt me when I try to explain why this is
unacceptable. We both agree that I should contact Mitsubishi
Customer Service.
11-12-09 11:51am I place a call to Mitsubishi Customer Service at
1-888-648-7820 and explain to them the issue I am having. I explain
to them that the only reason why my warranty is being denied is
because of "lack of service records" and "dirty fluids", both of which
can be discovered without tearing down the transmission. I also explain
that I did change all fluids at 29k miles and that of course the fluid will
appear dirty as the next recommended service to check fluid after 30k
miles is at 45k miles and I currently have 43,900 miles on the car.
Mitsu Customer Care opens a Customer care ticket and promises they
will be in contact with me before the end of the next business day.
11-12-09 12:17pm I inform Sal that I opened a ticket with Mitsubishi
Customer service. In the meantime I want them to continue working on
my car as I do not want the work to stall. I let him know that I will
continue to deal with Mitsu Customer service in the meantime.
Plan of action: I will be collecting samples of the fluid and sending them to a lab for analysis: http://www.blackstone-labs.com/transmission.php
