Torn between 4g63 2.3l or 4g64 2.4l
Im in the process of building my motor. I had my sights set on the 2.4l 4g64 build but now Im debating on just throughing a new 100m crank in my block and going with the 2.3l.
Ive talked to both SBR and MAP about a 2.4 revving to 8500 and they said its fine. Either motor thats all I want out of it. I dont want to take any motor to 9k really. For either motor Im not to sure on the turbo. Its either a black to keep cost down or if I get the money twin scroll 35R or bigger.
With that said I mainly drag race it but with the new stroker I plan on racing it on a few road courses.
Anyone have any advice ? Ill be running stock tranny and transfercase until it breaks or I get some more money once again. Which Im sure it going to have to be sooner than later with the added tq.
Anyone also have advice on knife edging a 4g64 crank ? Or bad idea because of the torque it will see and the coating being destroyed.
Then as for parts Im not sure if I want to go with MAP's Howards Racing Rods or Manley's Turbo Tuff Lite Rods. Then as for pistons I really like the quench dome on top of pistons and wiseco 1400 hds dont have that from the pictures Ive seen. So its either Manley pistons, MAP's Wossner's, or the Wiseco 1400 HD's.
I just want to put my money into the rights parts the first time.
What do you guys think ?

I think you have the right attitude for this build. Always making sure you get the right stuff before you start.
+1
I would go for the 2.4l myself. If your going to stroke it, may as well stroke it big.
Pistons and Rods. I heard Manley Pistons and Rods are great. I try my best not to mix brands just because I'm weird. MAP rods would work too. I heard great things about them as well.
Good luck with your build!

if your block is still good i would just have it honed and buy the crank. 4g64 is great for guys with a busted block as a cheap alterative to the pricey evo block, but if yours is good rock the stock! oh just make sure that you have your machine shop remove some material from the block where the new crank will hit the block. you can see a good pic of this on AMS's site in the 2.3 rebuild section. good luck with the build

I got the block out and apart. All is pretty much good. I think Ive decided to stick with the stock block but I want a 8500 rpm motor that is reliable. The 2.3 Im not to sure about revving that high. So I have been looking at the 2.2l. Only thing is I need to buy a pricey crank. But at the same time I would have to buy a 4g64 crank and have it balanced, and so on.
So many options I dont know what to do. I want to try and get as much displacement as possible. May also have to bore the block out .020 or more depending on the condition so that will get me a little but more.

Its still a 4g. 4g6 even. Just now Im getting a bigger bore which makes more power. Ive decided to go with a 2.4l. Now I need to find out if I go with 156mm rods instead of 150 to make it a long rod if I would have to go with a custom piston. Anyone have any idea ? Lancershop has the turbo tuff series in 6mm longer and 12mm longer for 780. A little pricey but no wait at least.

Went and picked up the block last nite for 125$. Cant go wrong there. Full short block in running condition. Also came out of a DOHC so I dont need to plug any oil passages. Only thing I need to do before I buy parts is getting the block to a machine shop and re-done.
