Clutch noise downshifting

I recently took a 300 mile trip to Albany, NY from Long Island. I noticed that once in a while, while I was downshifting to go through some tolls, I heard a sort of grinding/'farting' noise everytime I let go of the clutch while downshifting from 5th to 4th and 4th to 3rd. It does not happen while downshifting from 3rd to 2nd.

Have any of you experienced this? It's almost time for my 5k appointment, so I'll have the dealer check it out, but if anyone knows what this is - it might be helpful in trying to diagnose it.

Thanks!

Do a search for decel noise...

Some percentage of EVO8s have it, AFAIK there is no real "fix," but changing drivetrain to synthetic fluids seemed to help me a little.

Good luck,

I know all about the deceleration noise. It's like a loud chatter coming from the engine while you are coasting from a stop. What I am alluding to is a sort of grind/moan from the clutch area when I downshift. I even feel the vibration on the pedal.

I had this problem. As I would let out the clutch for a downshift I would get a loud humming noise until the clutch was fully engaged. The cause was weak fingers I believe. There were hotspots on the half of the flywheel and pressure plate. Clutch worked fine and there was no abnormal wear (7000 miles), just a really annoying noise. Mitsubishi engineer looked at it and warrentied it. But if they take apart your transmission and find your clutch melted form launching it, then your screwed. PM me and I will tell you where I got this warrentied.

I just recently started getting this exact same noise. It is NOT the decel noise. It only happens while the clutch is engaging(taking foot off of clutch pedal). It has 11,750 miles on the Odo. Everythings works fine, but it's very annoying. If it continues to be a problem I will take it in to have the Mitsu guys take a look at it.

are you up-shifting or down-shifting?

the decel noise is just vibration of the disc, try driving a twin disc, its noisy......

It is a faulty pressure plate. Mine started the noise at 4000 miles and finally after 4 trips to the dealer and at 9000 miles with still no clutch slippage the dealer fixed it under warranty.
