ACT Lock Out Thread
#48
Hi! Now I do afraid to install this clutch again!
So the story is...
evo9 car (6-speed) with almost 40k km - "stock turbo + m2 cams setup) - several sinle disk cluthes - oem, exedy stage 1, rallyart ceramic etc - no problem at all - high rpm shifting over 7.5k...
And, I got it...ACT XT pressure plate. Install it with oem exedy organic disk - lockout after 6k - lots of adjustments - no result - just went a little bit higher than 6.5k...drive this conf for about 1k km - got vibration in cluth pedal and a little bit later - broken crankshaft (stock 9!)...after engine rebuild (to 2.3L) installed again this combo - ACT XT+OEM disk - got lockout, switched to stock pressure plate -NO LOCKOUTS but...too much torgue (2.3L) killed organic disk...switched to ACT HD+oem disk - some lockout after 7k - but mort or less acceptable (the stroker - I did not run over 7k)...and...after 3k km I felt the same vibration on my clutch pedal...the story repeated - №5 crankshaft bearing almost destroyed and crankshaft "dead"...
Now I am 99% sure the reason is ACT (or at least combo with OEM disk).

2 more evos 9 gsr (6speed) - the 1-st one - high rpm lockout, vibration on cluth pedal and broken stock 4g63t crankshaft; the second one is still alive BUT there is high rpm lockout...

My ACT 6 puck with Unorthodox flywheel lasted about 50k miles and that was with 20+ passes at the track as well as numerous launches. 1st-2nd shift I couldn't shift above 7500 but 2-3 and 3-4 I could shift at 8k no problem. 5th syncro was burned out so it would grind regardless lol
Now I'm going with the TTP spec 6 puck and see how that does.

After exedy stage 1 install - there is NO more vibrations on pedal, no more lock out.
ACT is my nightmare - I spent almost half a year rebuilding my tranny and short block...thanks to this piece of junk!!!

The Thread Lives
Had my ACT XTSS installed w/ Road Race Fly wheel 2 months ago. Shifting above 7K does not engage. I dont 1/4 mile the car but if I did this would be a deal breaker
Other than that Ive tracked the car w/ great results & normal street driving no complaints
Certainly mixed remarks about what is the actual cause. Is adjusting the pedal engagement my next step???

well to add my 0.02 currently running act hdss with prolight flywheel, running ss upper and lower clutch lines, now to help with the drivetrain underhood shifting, i had an ingalls torque dampener installed, which helps resists engine movement for better engagement, currently over 20k miles on this clutch setup with two autox events and one drag day, and i can only think of two occasions where i got locked out, and was due to improper timing of clutch pedal and shifting. Ive got no complaints, and when my clutches failed before ACT backed me which I appreciated a lot, my last clutch threw them for a loop couldnt figure out how a car with less then 300hp and tq, never launched had broken the clutch hub and springs in about 30 pieces
