2 issues with motor n drivetrain!!

1. Ive been having some issues with my motor making a ticking sound, similar

to valve tap , once i turn the car on it ticks over n over untill it gets warmed

up but every time i turn the car off and on, it will occur again even if the car

was off for 30 minutes- any ideas?




2. Ive been racing my car for about a year on the track( road course ) and

now im noticing when i let the gas off, the rear diff is making a loud wining

noise, deff when im in higher rpms- does this mean i need to rebuild it or wut?



any imput will be great!

Lifter tick probably, its a common 4G63 issue.

Also sounds like the rear diff might be getting worn out unless your running a loud aftermarket one.

If the sound is RPM-dependent then it is not your rear differential. The rear differential noises are speed-dependent.

4G63's and the AWD drivetrain in general tend to be noisy beasts. I get a low decel noise in 5th going about 65. I've read on here it's pretty much normal. It seems to be coming from the rear but noises can travel easily in a drivetrain so it's hard to tell. I have read about quite a few people on here sure that their rear end is going out only to replace it and yet still have the noise. They later find out it was the tcase all along.

It's also normal on a 4g with a few miles like yours to have a mild tick at idle. Aftermarket cams will tend to tick louder because of the aggressive tall lobes. Many people with upgraded cams will run an aftermarket valve spring as well with a higher pressure further adding to valve noise.

Do a comp and leakdown test and see what you find. Swap your rear end fluid if you haven't already. Look for metal in what drains out and on the plug. Amsoil sever gear 75-90 GL5 is what I use. You might need a fluid change. Factory rear end fill diaqueen isn't even a true synthetic and it could have broken down significantly over time and hard racing.

I assume you've also tried an engine oil change.

I'm not trying to get flammed and I don't work for amsoil but here me out:

I own a 2002 toyota tacoma 4x4. I bought it new and I've personally ran nothing but mobile 1 10-30 in it since day 1, sometimes extended performance. Lately with the cold temps and miles up to 90,000 it's starting to be a little noisy when you start it up in the morning, not bad just a bit squeeky for a few minutes. The oil in it is only about 3 months old and it's mobile 1 it's not really due for a change yet. I get in a couple of mornings ago and decide to check the oil. It's about a quart low or on the low notch on the stick. I go in the garage and grab the amsoil 10-30 left over quart I had from my evo's oil change and top it off.

I start the truck up and immediately it's noticeably quieter than it's been in a while. The squeeking and slight ticking on start up is completely gone. I really couldn't believe it. It's been running great and quiet ever since. You might say that I simply have to change my trucks oil and it would have been quiet with the mobile 1. Well it's pretty fresh oil and I really don't remember noticing a difference like this ever before from adding or changing oil. I'm pretty much sold on amsoil.

I'll keep on with my book. The friend that I had help me replace my clutch got to talking with me about amsoil when I was filling the tranny up. He's been into motorcycles for a while and had an interesting story. He took a trip "down south" (as we call it in Alaska) to pick up a new bike he had a buddy that took the trip with him and also picked up a new bike. Nearly the same model, just a slightly different trim and color. I don't remember the model but it's not important.

They stayed a night in a motel and were going to go for a long tour/ride for a week or so through a few states to break in the new bikes. They both changed their oil before leaving. My friend put amsoil in his bike. His buddy put some other good brand in his, of course the recommended stuff it being a new bike and all.

They set off and put the first few hundred miles on the bikes then pulled off at a scenic view point. They both got off, stood back, and checked out the bikes. Amsoil bike was perfect, still looked new, just a little heat coming off the engine.
The bike next to it was running noticeably hotter. It was ticking and fizzling, smoking a little, which is semi-normal with brand new equipment as it burns the factory coating off, and the header had already started to discolor from the heat. A look over at the amsoil bike revealed a still new looking header chrome intact.

From what I've seen and heard first hand I'll be running amsoil in my stuff.

Sorry to waste your time I found the story interesting and thought I'd pass it on. It could help quiet your engine down a little.

The ticking issue is possibly a valve seal. At 60k my car had the same exact ticking you descirbed, it went away when it was warm, but happened everytime you start it.

The circular spring on the valve seal wears through then comes off and is free to bounce up and down on the stem of the valve.

Thanks JohnDoe1984- the story is very helpful, i did notice once i did my oil change before the race ( mobil 1) the ticking started- i changed it again and the ticking is the same but thats from the same batch of oil- AMS here i come!


20gmr!!! how did you figgure it was the valve seal other than anything else that could have happened??

Getting the mesh just right between the ring and pinion is what makes for a quiet differential - something the factory is good at but is often hard to achieve at rebuild time. So, I'd suggest something in the differential has caused the gear mesh to change - possible just wear and the bearings are getting loose.

My '04 WRX has the same noise in the rear differential. I notice it most at coast down at around 60 mph. All the cars made that year do it. It was a factory screwup.
