You do not want to keep the wastegate open wider or longer, you want to keep it closed as long as possible.

Doesn't that cause it to spike higher and drop off sooner? When I dialed in my Tru-boost I felt that it was necesssary to lower the crack pressure to allow it to hold boost a little better? It didn't come on as hard but it spiked less. I was curious to know if that higher spike was something to be weiry about? Sorry to jack the thead...

It sounds like something is set up wrong in your tru boost, I don't use them but you should be able to get the boost to hit hard and still control it so there isn't a large spike. Sell that boost controller and put a good manual on it.

Maybe I made it seem worse than it is. I can spike to aout 21psi then fall off to 18 by redline. I seem to hold around 19psi for most of the time (up to 6k rpm stock ix turbo) so I think its dialed in correctly.

To the OP's question, I just put an AEM intake on my 03 Evo and the spool time was decreased pretty dramatically. That's without a tune and with a stock exhaust. I have an Invidia cat-back sitting in my garage(been there for a month) just waiting to go on. I'm sure that since I've enabled the turbo to breath in easier, once I allow it to exhale faster the spool up will be pretty quick.

Hitting 21 psi initially and then having 18 psi at redline is not a spike. A spike is described more as you hit 21 initially and then it instantly falls to say 18 psi. What you are seeing is typical of the stock turbo just not holding boost all the way to redline.

I think if I were you, I'd put the larger turbo out of your mind. The stock turbo is pretty fantastic and since your car is stock there are many things you can do to it that will decrease the lag and make another 150 hp over what you have.

Best thing for you right now is a boost controller or getting your car tuned and having the boost dialed in through the ECU. Exhaust and air filter of course are #1 recommendation when it comes to parts this early in the game too. You won't believe the difference in the car by doing just a few things like that.
start small and you should be set... or if you have the funds then build the motor then go big as you want lol

Is there a how to for "crushing your dv?" I looked and didn't find anything, I know it's a noob question, but I don't want to cause any serious damage to my car.

Oh snapple, I meant to say CLOSED . A decent controller will keep it closed for as long as it can before it has to mitigate exhaust pressure to limit overboost.
