What helps a turbo spool faster

Just wondering what mods will help a turbo's spool faster. I keep hearing that IC pipes will help it spool a couple hundred rpms faster. What else will help and why?

Turbo back exhaust + O2 housing. More efficient exhaust flow.

Upgraded LICP has huge gains because of the efficiency of aftermarket LICP compared to oem pipes. The diameter is also larger therefore, more air can flow.
Upgraded UICP do help some, but not as much as the LICP.

I'm stock currently. I'm just looking into larger turbos and what would help bring the power band over to the left.

evo unknown, and, scby rex, are right about the smaller exhaust housing for the turbo, and the LICP.

You could pick up a used 9.8 housing cheap. The 9.0 housing would even spool quicker. Forced Performance sells the 9.0 housings new and probably has a pile of used 9.8´s sitting around their shop as well.

You could install an adjustable sprocket on the exhaust cam and play around with the cam timing. Another trick: although it won´t actually make the turbo spool faster, is to crush the stock DV. This way you won´t loose as much manifold pressure as you currently do. So you´ll have more boost at lower revs.

EDIT: Almost forgot....The easiest and cheapest method for getting the turbo to spoolup faster is to adjust the WGA for a higher spring pressure.

Another comment..
03-04 Evos have a 9.8 hot side and the 05-06 evos have a 10.5 hot side. The 9. is slightly, and i mean almost unnoticably slightly, faster spool. A usual upgrade for 03-04 evos is to go to a 10.5 hot side because it can make more top end power.
There is a guy on here looking into putting a smaller housing onto an FP Red to help spool faster.

Hold on, you are driving a stock EVO now? You mean STOCK? What kind of bigger turbo are you looking into? You do not want to put a larger turbo on a STOCK EVO.

Yes David, it is stock now. I'm not planning on putting a larger turbo on right now. Was just looking to the future. If I go with a slightly larger turbo it would be nice to mitigate the lag as much as possible.

Honestly it was more just for understanding.

I see rgar, I didn't want to see you just slap a bigger turbo on the car, you'd be surpised how many calls we get a day with a question like yours and someone wanting to buy something that is going to ruin their car, we talk them out of it and that is what I was trying to do for you.

I think if I were you, I'd put the larger turbo out of your mind. The stock turbo is pretty fantastic and since your car is stock there are many things you can do to it that will decrease the lag and make another 150 hp over what you have.

Best thing for you right now is a boost controller or getting your car tuned and having the boost dialed in through the ECU. Exhaust and air filter of course are #1 recommendation when it comes to parts this early in the game too. You won't believe the difference in the car by doing just a few things like that.

A decent boost controller with a gain feature will keep the wastegate open wider and longer before controlling exhaust flow. This usually nets quicker spool without risking overboost
