Buschur Racing..11.65 at 117 mph cont......
Hi guys,
Well the original post has been closed. I didn't feel it was out of hand but I am not the moderator. I saw quite a few posts that went without answers and have alot to say.
Stock ECU.......I feel as if the stock ECU with the AFC will run damn close to or the same times we are with the AEM on the car. The car made 360 on pump gas and ran a 12.09 at 115 mph. We put Stage 4 on the car and put race gas in it and made 380 and an additional 40+ ft lbs of torque. We never ran the car like that. Tym was anxious to get the AEM on and I wasn't going to stand in his way.
Our exhaust DB's....not sure what it is. Our lightweight muffler is loud at WOT and has a rumble at idle. Cruise it is quiet in the cabin of the car, quiet. The Magnaflow on the car is much quieter all the time and I am going to guess is under 85 DB's.
stock turbo or not....The turbo on the car is STOCK STOCK STOCK. It has the stock wheels in it, stock housings on it. It has not been modified.
Other runs after tuning and 11.65....Tym did try tuning the car again. He made another 11.8 second run and a couple more in the 117 mph range. One pass had a missed gear, one was completely sideways off the line. Like he said, he thinks he is dealing with a high end ignition miss and will be working on that this week.
Thrownout from not having a cage.....no, we were not thrown out for not having a cage in the car. You will find the same thing when we run the shootout here. Come for the DSM Shootout in July, the EVO's have their own class and you will not be bothered for not cutting up your EVO for a cage. You will need helmets and seat belts.
Tire pressure....32 psi. I set it. The car doesn't respond any better in the 60' with lower pressure. I think the tire is just to hard to make a difference.
500/580's turbos on the EVO....this is the plan when we get the manifolds. I can't wait to change the turbo on the car. We will be starting with our smallest unit. It is good for about 475 WHP, spool up on it is GREAT. Full boost should happen well before 4,000 rpm. The 500/580's are laggier and not as much fun but will be good for more HP. We one of these internally gated turbo's on our Conquest, it made 650 to the wheels and has gone 8.7 at 151 mph, powered by a 4g63..of course!!
The clutch line....We have pulled them out of 2G Eclipse's too. Good modification on that car. On the EVO with the stock clutch it would probably help too. With the Twin Disc we are running there has been no need to do it and driveability with the clutch is great with it in.
Launch RPM on the 11.65.....Tym says he was between 5500-6000 rpm. The clutch is then slipped aggressively as the throttle is floored. Makes for good smooth launches without the hard hit to the driveline.
Teaming up with Al....Al has his own agenda. He wasn't a tuner or shop when he first bought the EVO. He was hungry and wanted to get as fast as possible as soon as possible. He bought the right parts and got them on the car. The car went 11.63 at 119 mph with all the parts on. GREAT times and the fastest of anyone, then and still now. The times then were really nuts. At the shootout in July everyone, including us, were amazed. Knowing the 4g63 like we do we knew that those times were just a drop in the bucket but to have an EVO just a few months old and be running them was what impressed US. As a shop then and now we knew that just throwing someone else's bought parts at our car wasn't going to do the trick. We have always believed in devolping parts as we they needed changed and then optimizing each part before moving on to the next. That is why we have built the parts we have to date and why we have only done the modifications that we have so far. To change the head bolts and rod bolts to most guys is a good idea. To us it is not. If we don't run the part until it fails then how can we give good advice to our customers about what their next step should be?! Buying a $5,000 HKS turbo kit and bolting it on is great. Not for us though. We will be able to offer a kit that will not only be less than half the price but will outperform the HKS kit, it is just a matter of getting the parts cast and on the car. We have run 11.65 at 117.88 mph to date. This is on the stock head, head bolts, complete short block is stock right down to the rod bolts, there has been no weight removed other than what was saved from our parts, we are running on the stock tires and wheels, the car still runs the stock manifold, turbo, wastegate and 02 housing. Total price in mods for our Stage 4 package is only $3995. This kit layed down 380 hp and 349 ft lbs of torque to the wheels.
Who will have the fastest EVO when it is all said and done? Whoever decides to own the car the longest, spend all his money and never stops going to the track, that's who. Will we ever be at the top of the list for the quickest and fastest EVO 8? I would put some money down to say "YES" to that, I could loose the bet but I highly doubt it.
Good luck to everyone that owns one of these cars. I would like nothing better than to have atleast some of our parts on each and everyone of them. As for Al I have offered and he has one of our FMIC's that he is going to test. I am anxious for the results. We are also going to be working together offering each others parts. Al is a hell of nice guy from my experience. He is VERY aggressive though and comes across on the rough side, kinda like I use to, give him a little break. Competition brings out the best and worse in all of.

Try running more boost.
I ran 118mph in my 2G Eclipse GSX with an Evo III Big 16G this past weekend. Stock weight. The turbo is not ported, not clipped. I believe this has the same compressor wheel as the Evo VIII turbo, except the VIII has a 9.8cm^2 exhaust housing as opposed to my 7cm. Oh, and the reverse rotation, of course.
Previously I had only run 114mph, and my boost was set to around 22psi. This time, I turned up the boost to 25 to 26psi, and I ran 118mph. I also have HKS 264s, and the engine was flowing 44lbs/min peak airflow.
I too thought that the 16G wouldn't be efficient at that boost level, but I was dead wrong.
With the larger housing of the Evo VIII turbo, it should make even more power at those higher boost levels.
The only guy I know who has run a faster trap on a 16G is Curt Brown in his old FWD 1G.

Yes, great post. Your kits look great.
Curious. What kind of awd dyno are you using? (I'd like to compare to other tuner's numbers)
Do you think it is enough to just use the AFC or will you be developing a reflash or some kind utec ecu unit?

Mad props to Dave and his crew over at BR !!!
I fully respect his accomplishments on the track and the way they do business
I am bit by the bug of drag racing awd turbo cars in a major way and love nothing better than the competition of the track
Seeing as there are no classes for awd turbo cars to compete at this time - the BR DSM Shootout is basically the only game in town for evo racing and thank god its a super well run professional and fun event
At this point my car is ready to bust out some serious numbers having spent the entire months of August, Septeber and most of November developing my upgraded engine set up its finally all dialed in and ready to roll.
My problem is I am seriously starting to question if it is worth it financially and emotionally to continue in this sport
The highs of beating your record and the feeling of the speed are really super good - - - its a great feeling
BUT - the lows of breaking something and having to spend hard earned money and time fixing it and the possibility of crashing at over 120 mph into a wall are sobering realities that really suck the big one
Having seen so many of my evo pals who are great guys having blown up clucthes, trannys, engines etc etc - its starting to have an effect on me
Now having a car that runs almost as stock - but with just about 600 whp - that I can enjoy and drive everyday - its a big question in my mind IF I will go back to th track and risk it all just to post up a new number on the forum
Super props again to dave and BR - any man who brings his $30,000 Evo to a drag track and risks total distruction to test machine against physics deserves a big shout out from me !!!
I may compete with all the drag racing crowd - eg. BR, AMS, UR, Pruven, Turbotrix, etc etc etc and I may go crazy at times talking trash and stupid talk on these forums - - BUT - ALL of you guys who have the nerve to line up on the staging line and push the limits of man and machines are my Bothers in enjoyment of one of the most fun and frustrating insane hobbies you can ever have
Best of luck to all !!!!

BTW: IDRC now has an AWD Pro-Am class. There aren't many cars that enter the class. After my mods and getting everything tuned I may enter an event at e-town for fun.
The great thing about the evo...The more money I dump in; I can enjoy it every morning on the way to work. Most of the guys up here run BigBlocks with unstreetable tire/suspension setups to run 10's.
To run these times on a nearly stock car with around 35K invested...incredible. You aren't even running the 272's!
Now all I have to decide is whether to purchase the BR Intercooler or the APS...both look like excellent units.

Damn, Al... You're a good man. And Dave, same to you, you are all about results, dude I've seen what you did with Curtis's '91 Tsi a few years back, he was from Baytown, TX, good gawd, that was hell's wrath trapped inside of a 4g63 man. We are all lucky to have you two as supporters of this community.

What are stock egts?
What egts are acceptable on a stock 4G63 small block? (How high can you go?)

), but after running 12's at 112mph - I don't really feel like going back and breaking something to crack 11's. Kudos to you guys who are sticking with it through the elevens and faster! David - good post, but quit wasting time on this forum and develop my turbo kit already!

To the guy who asked stock EGT's, I have no idea - sorry
Just got my car together tonight after two maraton days from hell of wrenching
Its so nice to feel that power again after an entire week without my Evo
I seriously think I have to give the race mentality a rest till the spring and concentrate on just enjoying a wicked fast car and spend some quallity time out from underneath the car and hang out with my family for a while
