EGTs are basically useless! Temps in the combustion chamber approach 2000 degrees so people are crazy saying stuff will melt above 1650! It's easy, just make sure you can read knock. Your timing will tell you if there is a problem long before egts will. If your on c16 this is a little more difficult, but if your tunning for max power on race gas, you should probably be on a dyno with a wide band.

I second AvatarofWar... but knowing me i might just go to the track again.. but who knows for now.....

So a knock link will be my first gauge. Thanks.

I asked about the egt's because I thought that one advantage of an iron block was you could run higher egts.

I have to agree with the racing sentiments that have been voiced in this thread; I went down the same path at one time with my drag bikes. I loved racing and working on the bikes to the exclusion of all else in life and that burned me out on drag racing so I went circle track racing. We did well with the cars but it was even more time and work. It got to the point where all I was doing was going to my regular job, then home, then out to the garage till whenever, then to bed…next day start again. I eventually became just car owner and had other (better) drivers handle the car and mechanics that could maintain it during the race seasons. But I’m not a good spectator; I’d rather be out on the track. I sold the car and took a long break to enjoy life…and raise a family.

Fast-forward fifteen years, knowing my love of just about everything that races off-road my wife and I buy an Evo. She actually put the racing bug in my ear so I said sure, lets do it, but this time we do it for fun. After taking into account all the problems of the past we decided to go bracket racing in the NHRA Street class.

At least in a bracket class you can drive as hard as you want or not, consistency wins more races in that category than money. And you can make mods at your own pace, not because you have to keep up with the competition. And there’s no telling what you may run against, a 65 Buick, a late model Camaro, an old Mopar, doesn’t matter because everyone is in the same boat, run what you brung, the clocks will make us equal.

As someone that has been there and done it before it was a cliché all I can offer is this, never lose sight of the fun, the enjoyment of racing, the very reason we do it to begin with. If it becomes too much like work then regret creeps in and the fun begins to leave. And even though its going to take a certain amount of work to get where you want to go at least its on your own terms, at your own pace and extremely satisfying once you arrive at your goal, however fast that might be.

Good luck to everyone racing their Evos in the coming year, looking forward to hearing from everyone in every form or category from Rally racers to straight liners. And thanks to those that have pushed the envelope in this first year to show us all the possibilities with the Evo.

Rick

Well the original post has been closed. I didn't feel it was out of hand but I am not the moderator. I saw quite a few posts that went without answers and have alot to say.

Stock ECU.......I feel as if the stock ECU with the AFC will run damn close to or the same times we are with the AEM on the car. The car made 360 on pump gas and ran a 12.09 at 115 mph. We put Stage 4 on the car and put race gas in it and made 380 and an additional 40+ ft lbs of torque. We never ran the car like that. Tym was anxious to get the AEM on and I wasn't going to stand in his way.

Our exhaust DB's....not sure what it is. Our lightweight muffler is loud at WOT and has a rumble at idle. Cruise it is quiet in the cabin of the car, quiet. The Magnaflow on the car is much quieter all the time and I am going to guess is under 85 DB's.

stock turbo or not....The turbo on the car is STOCK STOCK STOCK. It has the stock wheels in it, stock housings on it. It has not been modified.

Other runs after tuning and 11.65....Tym did try tuning the car again. He made another 11.8 second run and a couple more in the 117 mph range. One pass had a missed gear, one was completely sideways off the line. Like he said, he thinks he is dealing with a high end ignition miss and will be working on that this week.

David, were u using the stock spark plugs ? ..... and for those who will go the SAFC route and not the AEM will it also be possible to solve this issue ?

While Tym was setting up the AEM and tuning he has hit 30 psi of boost with the car. Not for long, just an instant and then did some re-adjusting. The highest boost we have run through the traps is right around 21 psi. The car needs more tuning with the AEM right now. There is something going on with what seems to be a misfire at high boost and the top end of the track even at 20-21 psi. We will be installing a new prototype ignition on the car that Tym built, hopefully this week.

As for the MPH record on a 16g, I do believe it still belongs to me from oh...about 10 years ago. I went 121.7 in my old AWD.

We use a 2wd Dynojet for tuning the car.

The AFC will handle the car perfectly. The only problem we have encountered is the fuel cut when the tempurature drops. To get around this we are also offering a reflash of the ECU's for $275.

The car crosses the finish line at 117.88 mph right at 7500 rpm in 4th gear.

EGT's...interesting topic. I use to run an EGT gauge long ago in the AWD. I found back then that most were so slow to read by the time the EGT's got high enough you had already caused damage. Today the EGT probes/gauges are MUCH faster. We do use them now and they are good tuning tools. We don't like to get OVER 1650 degrees F. Safe tuning I am going to say shoot for no more than 1550-1600 F. When you install the probe do it in the turbine housing or part of the manifold that merges the exhaust from all the ports. Don't just run it in one port.

The plugs we are running in the car now are the same plugs we run in the other 4g63's, the NGK 7's. We have them, set of four for $12.

That should answer all the questions.

I didn't realize that you had gone that fast on a 16G. Very nice! Particularly back when people weren't even running cams!

So there are a few people in front of me. Still, it surprised the hell out of me to run 118mph with 26psi on a turbo that is thought to have a 23 to 24psi cap and a mph cap of around 116 on a very well tuned car.

I do know that Curt Brown ran 12x mph in his FWD at the shootout (either that or the import event the day after) 2 or 3 years ago.
