Mitsubishi VS. Subaru thread from David Buschur
Mitsubishi VS. Subaru thread from David Buschur
The other thread is quite cluttered from argueing. Thought I'd start a new one. Warning this is going to be long!!
First I want to thank Exedy Racing Clutches from their sponsorship of the event. Payouts and free food were provided by them for the event.
Also want to thank Al from Dynoflash for his support.
O.K. the event went well. Spectator attendance was way up (no count yet) race car count was down though. Baffles me as there were a ton of cars sitting in the parking lot that could have raced and made as many passes as they wanted for an extra $20. Bad part of this is last year this event was held on a Friday. I wanted to help the event grow so we moved it to a Sunday. Now the Sunday track rental is BIG money, not sure we even broke even. If we didn't the event will either be cancelled for next year or moved back to a Friday. I guess that's my problem. I'd like some opinions as to whether or not having it on Father's Day may have hurt it.
For the good stuff.
AMS brought out their car. First pass of the day ran a 9.13 at 162 mph. Freaking bad ***. I knew right off with our stock trans, lifting to shift, and weighing 3050 pounds we were not going to get close to that! It's a good thing we really like the guys at AMS because with the times they are running it would be easy to just hate them for it! haha They did have some problems on the 2nd pass and parked the car for the rest of the day. Too bad as the car has more in it and I think 8's are right around the corner. See you guys in a few weeks at your event.
Curt Brown brought out his car. This guy is disgusting when it comes to driving. I tuned his car so was anxious to see what it would run. After the first pass he asked me to double check the log. Curt usually doesn't lift to shift, he was taking it easy and lifted both passes he made. AFR's were in the low 11:1's, boost was low, timing was very low but seems to be inline with what needs to be run with the 2.1 liter engine. Second pass Curt clicked off a 9.68 at 141 mph. He had to be towed back as the SB 2.1 liter gave up. I was very concerned with the tune in the car and viewed the log after wards. No reason for this to happen. He was still lifting to shift, boost was still only hitting 35 psi peak and AFR's/timing were just like they were the first pass. Sorry to see it happen Curt, you probably could have pulled off a win for the day. Also, want to thank Curt for offering to let us use his slicks on our black car. Very nice of you and we appreciated the offer. I'd love to see our car run a 1.40 sixty foot time
Al Friedman was there. Car was suffering from a misfire problem. He had tried to fix it at the shop, we dyno'd it and it seemed gone with a map change I made. Was not gone. Al stopped by our trailer and said he was leaving the track. I felt bad and said "Let's try one more thing." We pulled our spare ignition for our black car and the AEM EMS out of our Time Attack car and put it in his car. I then loaded the map from our black car into his car and he gave it a shot. The car ran 10.4 at 144 mph. Al pulled two clicks of fuel out of the map and ran it again. 9.7 at 150 mph. A new personal best and the car was fixed.
Nobody can call me biased. I really pissed Al off when he pulled to the line in the semi-finals and I saw coolant under his car. I was the one that made the call to shut him off and had him backed off the track. There was no way I was letting a 150+ mph EVO run down the track with coolant running out of it. Had he wrecked I couldn't have lived with it knowing I saw the coolant. There was nothing broken it was a dumb mistake. The radiator was topped off with coolant AND the overflow bottle was also filled with coolant. When the car heated up the coolant from the radiator is pushed into the overflow bottle where in this case there was no room and then out the overflow tube. Al took 3rd in the Quick 8.
Note to self......**It is very hard to run 10's on a real street tire
My white RS. I called out my buddy Kevin Lawson to drive it for me. (first because I was busy with the race and second cause I suck driving). He was able to run a 11.11 at 123.77 with the car. I guess that's it. I don't think it has a 10 second pass in it at the weight it is at with a real street tire on it. If we put Hoosiers or slicks on it then it would be a different story but for now I guess our 20g is good for 11.11 at 123.77. Kevin took 3rd in the EVO vs WRX class.
Jarrod's car with our GT3065 kit on it ran really well. 11.04 at 128.6 mph. Sixty foot time was only a 1.72 at he is also running on a real street tire (BFG KDW's, 245-45-18's) This car is full weight, gorgeous car. A/C, all sound deadener, Exedy Twin disc, TV, sound system etc. Not a track car by any means.
Mike's C's car. Also a full weight car, running stock Advan's. Mike was able to run some low-low 11's too at 129+ mph. He is leaving this morning with it to drive to Maryland and then back to Texas. Would have loved to see him break into the 10's but with the traction and 90+ degree temps, it was not the day for it.
Trent clicked off some 11.8's at 115 mph with his car on pump gas and 21 psi of boost.
One of the bad parts of the event is not getting time to watch. With the tuning I have to do I am pretty much running from car-to-car most of the day checking logs and making adjustments.
Our black shop car. Now we have been fighting this car since we put it together. First it was a misfire last year, anything over 32 psi it would mis. We got that sorted out with the updated settings in the AEM EMS. Great, now we can make a ton of power. Next problem this year has been the car just shuts off, usually in high gear after a run or two. I mean it shuts off as in if you view the datalog the log just goes flat lined like it had a heart attack. Been killing ourselves (mostly Daniel) trying to find it. We have been through 3-4 AEM boxes, which got fried. Seemed to be a wiring issue. The entire engine harness in the car was changed along with a ton of other things. Could not find it. Well Friday after viewing some logs I found something that we never noticed. The battery volts was the only part of the log that was different when the car flat lined the log. Daniel busted butt Friday and changed the main harness for the alternator, the alternator, the battery and a secondary harness in the car for the changing system. We loaded the car on the dyno Saturday during the dyno competition and made one quick pull, 775 whp and 520 ft lbs of torque. Perfect. Pulled the car off and at the race it performed flawlessly.
The car is spinning the tires like mad. Best 60' we could get from it was a 1.55 and that was on a run that stunk. For those of you that saw/heard the car. The popping in through 1st gear and into 2nd was the rev limiter which the car was just being held on, 10,000 rpm. Freaking flawless day for the car. We made 10 passes with the car. We have made probably 60 runs so far this year with it. Couldn't be happier now. Seems as though the harness/battery/alternator has fixed it from shutting off. All we can figure is something was damaged in the alternator/harness as when we bought the car it was a totalled EVO, we re-used those parts. Our best run was a 9.62 at 153.89 mph. I'd like to point out that this car is running Hoosier DOT tires, power windows, power sunroof, factory dash, radio, speakers, full legal cage, carpet, factory seats, stock EVO transmission that my brother built, we are completely lifting to shift. With Dan in the car it weighs in at 3050 pounds. We do run an open exhaust on it. It is time to decide what's next. Daniel wants to put the car on the street and drive it. I don't really care what we do but I hate to turn it into a full drag looking car. Kind of weird. Being the fastest means doing what it takes but I just can't decide if we should get the weight out and say the hell with it or put exhaust on it and just improve the suspension/tires. This would let the car run 9.3's but at this weight it would be tought to run as fast as our friends at AMS. Decisions, decisions. It's a sad day but honestly I am happy with the car like it is and not unhappy being in the #2 spot. I must be getting soft
haha! There was a day I was driven by hate but when you like your competition it isn't as hard to deal with.
I had a great time this entire weekend. Thanks to all of you that came out. It would be nice to get this organized for more of a Subaru VS Mitsubishi event but it doesn't seem to be happening. I will visit their boards and see what they want to make the event better for them.

David,
Nice write up! I wanted to be there but couldn't talk my wife into letting me go as she had already made plans to celebrate Father's day at her parents house.
I think Sunday is better then Friday to have an event like this just as long as it's not on a holiday.
I'll see you guys in a couple of weeks as I have some parts on order from you to have installed! I'm looking forward to your 20g9 plus alky!

wow thats sick. so as for my coments and opinions.
1. make the event on a day thats not a holiday and maybe host it at englishtown. i think more would show/perticipate.
2. the 20g makes some crazy passes, and i got one, haha.
3. AL i will see u tomorrow and congrad u in person. good looking out for a friend david.
4. go for the lightened full drag black evo. imho its way too much for a street driven evo. and y the hell not? go after AMS, but in a good way.
5. congrats to AMS.

Excellent job Mr Buschur!! even running a 11.1@123 on a non so hard core RS is a sucess.
I am very impressed with the results. Congrats to you and your team and thanks for the other fast Evos for representing

Great post Dave. I felt like I was there.
I wouldn't put your 775 car out on the street, it's built for the strip just go all the way strip with it. It's not like you guys don't have enough evo's for the street.
Best of luck.
Ben

i'll give you a couple of ideas.
#1, don't use Al to promote the event on the Suby side. this is like asking Osama Bin Laden to convert christians into muslims. good luck.
#2, go beyond nasioc.com. you should contact actual Subaru shops and personally invite them. the results are going to be redundant when you have 5-6 evo shop cars going up against wrx customer cars.
Wow, thanks for the sentiment Dave.
You guys are really a class act.
The black car was running very strong all day. What was most impressive was it kept going and going and going. Very well put toghether car Guys
I think my favorite moment of the day was after out 9.99 pass (the second one of the day) we were walking accross the line and dave stopped us and said "Dont worry you guys will cut an 8 your next time out. No need for the sad faces" LOL as always it was a pleasure hanging out with The Buschur boys.

Few more things....
We have been talking about the car/race here all morning. Not sure which direction we'll take on the car.........
AMS, your car is going to run 8's easily, I was sure on the 3rd pass it would do it.
I do need to promote the race to the Subaru guys better. I heard Al was stirring the pot over on their forums but he thought it would actually help the turn out.
As for having the race somewhere other than Norwalk Raceway Park. That won't happen. I have to run it and such and doing it somewhere other than here makes no sense. The turn out being low isn't from where it's held, that's for sure. The DSM/EVO Shootout that is going into it's 14th year is huge every year and continues to grow.
Another funny thing from the event. I saw the our black car sitting at the end of the day and asked Daniel why he wasn't running it. He said, "The race is over." I said, "So what, it's like a track rental go run it." He gets in the car and goes out and runs a 9.81 @152, then comes right back and runs 9.62 at 149.55 and then comes right back and runs 9.79 at 151.75, these three runs were done at 2:41, 2:49 and 2:52 pm. So in other words he just made a pass, and came right back around, never shut the car off. Pretty impressive you ask me.
Something else. The Subaru boards. I would like to promote the event on some of the Subaru forums but every single time we visit a Subaru board we are kicked off for talking about holding a race or trying to sell a part. I am not going to pay for vendor status on a Subaru board to simply let guys know there is a race coming up and such. The rules on the Subaru boards have proven to be a little on the strict side for me.

Buschur and AMS , congrats on everything.
you both continue to impress!!
being a member on the subie forums also, is always entertaining. everyday we fall more towards the evo side hee he.
congrats again! 8's for AMS, buschur not far behind, cant wait to see where the cars go!
we wont ever go after the 1/4 times, but we may have to come play with you guys in time attack next year
cheers

Dave, I was typing this when I saw your second post.
It was a great day, the wife and I had an awesome time. That is a great recap of the day. Wish we could have stayed around longer, but had to work today.
I think some of the low turn out was the holiday. Luckily I have an understanding wife and family. Need to find a way to get more Subaru's there.
Either day works I think. Last year was nice because it was early in the season and temps were lower. This year a little easier to make the race(didn't have to take time off work). If there is an event next year, maybe early in the season on Saturday/Sunday.
It's a tough call on the black car. At what point does it stop becoming an Evo and becomes just any drag car. I say if you are going for it and want to keep it an "Evo". Then at least front and back half the car.

Sounds like it was a fun event - I must say - I want to see Curt Brown driving one of those tuner cars. Adding a pinch of driver ability along with well built and high hp makes one deadly combo. I remember Curt driving Dale's gvr4 and busting out with some fabolous times!
