Unknown Turbo System Issue...
Unknown Turbo System Issue...
So I'm currently living in Germany... I'll try to run down the situation quickly and easily as possible.
I was driving to work this morning... turning a corner in third gear and heard a pop (almost like I had hit the rev limiter but I was only at like 4-5k). I let off the gas and continued driving 20 minutes to work with no issues.
Lunch time, I head out and hit the autobahn to go get food. I was merging into traffic and pulled in third a bit, probably didn't even hit 8lbs or so.... another pop. This time the car dies. So I edge over to the side of the road, pop the hood and the upper IC pipe is popped off at the throttle body. This happened two more times before I made it back... the first time because I didnt have a screwdriver to tighten the clamp down with, the second time because I accidently hit boost (about 4lbs).
The engine is running perfectly fine so obviously I have ruled that out. I've never blown a turbo on any car I've owned (1g TSi or this one). I read up on some common tell tale signs of turbo failure... but I haven't really noticed any of the symptoms.
I don't have time to tear into it today, but was planning on it tomorrow. Any thoughts would be GREATLY appreciated so I can have an idea on what to look for tomorrow. I tightened that IC piped down really well, so there must be some serious pressure getting crammed back into the system in order to pop that off.
Turbo dead...? BOV went kaput? I don't pretend to know more than I do. And on this particular situation, I'm not really sure. Thanks for any help in advance!

Sorry.... care is at about 66k miles. Stock Charger with a crap Greddy BoV that I am replacing as soon as I get back from Tucson, AZ. I am leaving for there next Monday and will be there for a few months. (Time to buy parts and ship them back to myself!)
I can rev the car in neutral as high as I want as well. The upper IC pipe is one of those aftermarket rubber style ones. The guy who I bought it from in 2005 had it on there and I never bothered to change it. It's not some off brand or anything, can't remember off the top of my head. But I've never had a problem with that hose popping off, even at the track hitting redline.

some of those cheap hoses do end up popping of right at the tb elbow, but ETS or the OEM one will do just fine, so look for one of those. As for the turbo being dead, you are not even close yet, at 66k miles you are fine, and the only way to know if its dead is if the exhaust blows smoke when you at WOT or trying to build boost.
I feel stupid now. I didn't even think about something as simple as that stupid worm clamp. Thanks for the help everyone. I was to caught up in thinking about the turbo messing up. HAve been out of the loop a lot here in Germany because there are no Evos in my area. So no one to talk cars with. hah.
