Pulling the Block

Hey guys I searched and didnt find much so I thought I would ask.

What is the fastest way to get just the block out of the car? I had a clogged injector melt a piston and I need to get this thing shipped off for the 2.3L

I just dont want to pull the whole suspension, k member and all that fun stuff if I can avoid it cause I'm pressed for time

I wouldn't say there is any fast way to get the engine out as it requires a lot of stuff to be removed. Drain your engine oil, coolant, transmission and transfer case oil. You do not have to remove the subframe though. Just remove the hub carrier bolts (camber bolts), pull the half shafts. Remove the intermediate shaft on the driver side (behind the driver side half shaft) with a slide hammer. Remove the turbo and exhaust manifold, radiator, fuel line to the fuel rail/pressure regulator, vacuum hoses, electric connections, shifter linkage, heater hoses, engine mounts, power steering, ac.

After all that you can hoist the engine with the transmission and transfercase attached (slide the transfer case off the driveshaft). If that is too tricky, as I have not tried that method yet, then just remove the transfer case from the transmission (under the car), move it aside and then remove the engine and transmission together.

I pulled mine from the top with the trans attached. Didnt want to risk stripping a k-member bolt and have more problems.

thanks guys. I usually have a garage to work in but I dont anymore and its sub zero temps out here, haha.. I'm used to pulling the k-member to do clutch/tranny work but I've never pulled just the block itself

I just pulled mine out the bottom. In my opinion its way easier (i have done both ways) Just disconnect everything and take the transfercase out of the car. then get car WAY up in the air and use a hoist to lower the motor onto a dolly and wheel it out. You can leave the K member in doing it this way also.

ive done it both ways,i prefer going out the bottom though...less chance of scratching up the paint in your bay when working alone...never had to remove the k member for any reason

i pulled mine from the top but i had everything already disconnected from it, so it made it easy. let the power steering pump and ac compressor hang, don't disconnect them from their lines.

pull the front bumper cover off while your at it as well, thats easy as hell to get off and will save you from scratching stuff.. same goes with the radiator.

if you disconnect the trans first it dont matter what way you go, it comes out easy. if you pull the trans + head than its REALLY easy to get out. we pulled mine from the top and dropped it in from the top as well. didn't hit nothing. Its much tighter to drop back in though, than it is to pull out.

I could see if you're trying to pull the trans still connected it would be WAY easier to go from the bottom, but just remove the trans before you pull it and it comes out the top easy.

Yeah when I pulled it out the top with the tranny still on that was a PITA. You have to shoe horn the crap out of it because the engine and tranny together are wider than the frame rails.

theres a bunch of bolts that hold it to the block.. youll see them uptop. don't forget to release the throw out bearing from the wedge collar before yanking it off the stud things that stick outta the block.

what all did you do so far?

you gotta remove all ic piping, all the cables in the way, battery, battery tray, axles, input shaft from transmission that goes into transfercase, and a bunch of little stuff like that. you may have to use a pry bar to seperate the bellhousing from your block depending on stuck it is on those stud things.. ( not the right word for them)

also keep in mind that the transfercase bolts directly to the transmission so you must remove all the botls to the transfercase as well. and drain fluids or it will leak **** everywhere. also theres a tiny oring that sticks on the transfercase where it connects to trans, don't lose it. it looks like a injector oring. chances are it will be stuck to the casing tho, so ull be ok.
