Same thing was happening to my friends GS-R. His transmission fluid was low so he topped it off. That seemed to do the trick.

Could be a number of things. Check the ball detents on the drivers side of the tranny, just below the battery tray. See if one of them is backing out. It could also be worn syncro springs, worn syncro hub and a few other things.

When I test drove my first Evo 9 GSR, it kept popping out of 5th gear as well. I wasn't doing anywhere near 80mph, but it happened consistently. Needless to say, I walked away from that car. Hopefully it isn't a transmission/gear going bad.

mine does that in first and theres a possibility that the bushings are bad, so you could check that

Wow... I highly doubt it.

i dont have an evo, but do you guys also need to align your shifter/adjust shifter cable? that can also be a possibility. i know SRT4s had a problem with that in 3rd gear due to bent shift forks that wont allow the syncros to fully engage.

Mine did this today about an hour through a two-hour drive. It has done it a time before, but about a month ago. I would guess it became too hot in that one gear because the next day it was fine. I would like to know what it is as well though

What happens if you go above 80 in fourth then try to go to 5th? This happened to my buddy and mitsu told us to try this and they said if it goes into 5th when you try you prolly just need fluid.

Drain the trans fluid and inspect it in bright light. Check shifter detent ball/spring assembly.
