Check fluid, check the ball detents, or it could be the synchro going bad. Does it grind anytime while you try to shift into 5th?

Mine usually does. I got to the point thinking the gear itself was shot, being the teeth worn down

popping out of gear is usually bent shifter forks or a shifter out of adjustment.

worn syncro in 5th. Sounds like the hub is worn for sure. How many miles are on the car? This is a common issue with SE-R's

Sounds like the synchro to me if it only grinds while going into 5th.
