It's a pretty easy job except the damn intake manifold bracket.... that was a mother and I didn't put it back on. Just take off the obvious things, like accessory belt, water pump pulley, passenger side engine mount, upper/lower timing belt cover to loosen the timing belt. Then pull the exhaust manifold, all the electrical connectors, vacuum, and coolant lines.
The job takes a bit of time, but isn't that hard with the exception of the damn intake manifold bracket. I ended up removing the bolts from the block instead of the manifold, because the ones on the manifold were too damn hard to get leverage on. You will most likely have to get your head resurfaced, I just got done doing that because of an overheating issue.

As far as making sure everything lines up, just make sure all the hash marks line up on the oil pump gear, the crank sprocket and the two cam gears with the cam cover. The only thing that might get off is the oil pump gear, but just make sure you don't let it rotate too much. If it does rotate too much and you lose track of where it is, you can take a bolt out of the exhaust side of the block by where your turbo hangs down and stick a screwdriver in there. It should be able to go in quite a bit. If it gets stuck, it is out of phase.
Here's a link to a how to on timing belt replacement:

Of course you won't need to remove the crank sprocket (can be a pain without an impact gun) or the balancer shaft belt, because you are just loosening the timing belt, but it should help some.

I use this method to start:

also, a set of flex head ratcheting box end wrenches are your friend. I picked up a cheap set for 40 bucks from a local Harbor Freight and they have saved me so many headaches.

Yes, you only loosen the belt so you can slide it off the cam gears, you don't have to remove any other part of the belt.
