6-Speed MR: Test -- Information to Follow
I had a really nice guy (older mechanic) I knew at Mitsu and he always told me, the 5 speeds are just what come out of the normal lancers in many ways, the 6 speed was built for the evo. And in all means should be better, he was very surprised when I was telling him most felt the 5 speed was stronger.
I just started a new job and cant wait to get the saving account back up. I am thinking i would rather build my 6 speed rather than get a 5 speed. I like the 5 speed, I start out in 2nd often, I love the 2.3 grunt, 5th gear at 40 all the time, I want to get my tranny set up to go through the trap like a 5 speed (4th gear)and have the 5th 6th gear for hwy or what ever would work. I need to look into people building 6 speeds. Then of course if I do the one I will prob to the TC at the same time.
Yeah there aren't to may people on here building them. I don't think shep does too much with them, the last I heard TRE was doing something with them, but it wasn't in respects to holding a ton of power.
Ya thats all I have ever read was that TRE built the 6 speed, I want to get shep to build it though cash can make people do just about anything so who knows. Maybe I will just have to get a 5 speed, but if it keeps holding well I will just keep it stock, and so many people sell stock 6 speeds for cheap so you know. Before I take it to the track much this summer I need to buy another cheap car :-) but I love driving my car everyday. So far I am happy I got an MR
We have a customer who has made close to 600 whp through the 6 speed. At first it was fine but is starting to have issues with 4th. As it stands right now we can't get parts from mitsubishi just whole gearsets 1-6 or a whole trans . So the rebuild cost is very high. There maybe some after market parts available now. Look inside of a 5 speed and then look inside of the 6 speed you will see the problem . 1st gear in a 6 speed is huge and by the time you get to 4th the gears are just too small to hold all that power. Honestly at this time you are better off switching to a 5 speed until the 6 speed gets sorted out , if possible for that power level.
Both trans. are very different as stated. And at the point, not many people having a 6 speed, it will never get sorted out, its going to either be get a built 5 speed or see if someone will do a custom 6 speed. And I am sure that will be rare
Some photos of 4th gear from my first failure four years ago:

Yes it's that small. Heat and torque is what will kill it. Street guys are probably ok depending on power

i have a 6 speed pushing over 600 hp to the wheels with no problem so far
just stay on top of the fluid and u should be fine
its true that the 6 speed internals are smaller so the heat damages them eaiser thats why mitsu put heat fins on the bottom of the tranny, i always make sure that there not blocked by dirt or rocks so they can do there job
but a transfer case upgrade is a must i went throught 4 t cases before i got smart and got a non-acd and sent it to shep

It's the long pulls in forth on the hi way (for example) that will kill the gear. As was said Torque and heat with kill it. I'm changing to a 5spd when i can get the coin together. Shep + twin plate = safe
