DIY air box

I made this today using some pieces of aluminum that I got for free. I have no idea if it will lower the air temperature in the area of the intake, but I figure it can't hurt. It isn't perfect by any means, but I think it is pretty good for not having anything but some shears to cut the metal with. If anyone is local and wants to do some logging to see if it makes any difference let me know.

I would imagine it would have some effect with keeping the heat away from the intake. Its putting a barrier between that super hot manifold and your intake and your flowing in air on the top. Looks good, good job

Thanks. I figure it can't hurt. I have some more metal so I might have to make another one.

you could make another one and try to clean it up and make it fit tighter around the intake but otherwise I think it looks good. I'm running a carbon fiber heatshield similar to that

I have some more metal sheets so I will probably do this.

Seems good.

But if you have a lot of metal sheets why not also make a rear underbody (diffuser). Just a thought.

They are too small.

looks good. Anytime you isolate the filter from the air passing through the radiator you should see lower IATs. I have actually been wanting to make one of these for a while.

Just go to a sheet metal shop and ask to buy some scraps of aluminum. I bet they wouldn't charge you more than a few bucks a sheet. You'll need a set of metal shears, or better yet some sort of cutting wheel on a dremel (what I used). Also remember to wear gloves or you will cut a finger off.

I like how those shields are fixed firmly with bolts! I hope someone mass-produce effective heat shields for universal open-type air filters. Actually the only reason I still keep my stock air box with a drop-in filter is the lack of good heat shields.

I could make them so that all you would have to do would be attach the bolts. Wouldn't be very expensive.
