IX turbo to 25g Conversion - TurboMikeInc

In my search to convert my IX turbo to something bigger, I was recommended to contact TurboMike in Florida by a close friend who has dealt with them in the past. They don't specialize in Evos but they do specialize in turbo rebuilding and have some serious cars running in Puerto Rico, Australia, and even Jamaica.

Long story short, I was advised by them that they have done a few conversions on the IX and they call it a 25g conversion. After searching I've been reading is impossible and decided to challenge them in explaining how is done. They claim is a compressor wheel they have tested and nobody is using. I asked if my compressor housing was going to be exchanged by one bigger and they said it would remain the same but it would be ported to allow the bigger compressor wheel to fit. I was also told it would flow 54lbs per min. I wish I had more information about this conversion but they don't give out too much.

Now I'm uncertain about what to do with my turbo. Any opinions will be greatly appreciated.

The guys there do good work, but I would try and get more information on the compressor wheel they are using. They may have upgraded the standard rotation turbos in the past and not the current reverse rotation turbos.

They have worked on evos recently and a customer from Jamaica had his smaller VIII turbo converted with the wheel they are using and the car broke 400 whp. The car is now in Jamaica. The fact that there is little information posted, covered, or advertised makes it difficult for someone not in the same geographical area to judge their work. Yet everyone who knows them swears by them. The do work on straight drag cars and very high horsepower vehicles nevertheless. I just can't understand how a compressor wheel with some porting on the original compressor housing can produce so much power and air volume. I'm not too deeply informed or keep up with everything but I believe the IX conversions from FPgreen, FPred, and even the BBKs all change the stock compressor housing to a higher flowing one.

Nevertheless, by them using the stock compressor housing, the overall price is way lower than other competitors.

The stock turbos will reach about 400whp. I would ask Hong for a little more details on the turbo, Im sure they would oblige if they want your business.

I've spoken to Hong all I get is that the stock 9 compressor housing is big enough to have some minimal machine work to fit their turbine wheel of choice.

I've read that turn around time from FP is not that good and I can't find any information on pricing or details for the IX to red conversion. All I find is the off the shelf pricing for a brand new FPred. MikeTurbo quoted me around $550 to convert my IX if it did not a total rebuild and $850 if it needed to be completely rebuilt. The is also a $200 option to machine a 3in inlet cone with bullet holes for anti surging.

As you can see the overall cost is much cheaper than anything out there and if it flows at 54lbs per min it should be considered. The problem is there is very little knowledge, data or records of this conversion.

Go with something that's more proven: CBRD's BBK Full, or a FP Green, Red, or Black.

good advice but i'm sure theose companies weren't always "proven"

if the op wants to go with the "little guy" then i'd say go for it. there are plenty of people in the performance business that know what they are doing, if it can be done cheaper with the same performance then this guy might be the next big thing...never know

Do it and report back with results. How much is he charging for the upgrade? If you're on a tight budget don't forget MAP upgrades your stock turbo to a SST turbo for ~$850.

Its rated at 54lbs/min, right inline with a BBK or HTA Green. If the OP wants to be a guinea pig, go for it! I am just one of those guys that wants to put something in my car that I KNOW is gonna make power and be reliable. If I'm trying out something that hasn't been put through the ringer in the community, I do as precise before/after tests as possible, post the results, and hope others add their results to the discussion later.

If it makes power or blows up, tell us!

A 25g is a big turbo, I've never heard of this as even being possible to even be attempted. Evos are fairly new, but DSMs have been around a lot longer and back then stuffing a 20G wheel into a 16G housing was nutty and is still somewhat of a mixed bag today. I'm wondering how this will turn out.
