Attempt at a quiet 3" exhaust

Currently i have on an Espelir JGT500 catback exhaust and i have been driving with it for the past 3 months on a daily basis. It is considerably loud for my taste, especially at mid to upper range rpm; but i must admit, it sounds great at WOT! In the past two days, i have jacked up my car and crawled underneath to take some measurements. I plan to replace the current straight through N1 style muffler with a magnaflow 5" X 8" X 14" oval muffler (12229) and the existing resonator with a magnaflow 4" X 14" round muffler (14419), both of which i placed an order on tonight. Theoretically, there will be two muffler in series, round muffler in front of the rear axle and oval muffler after the rear axle, similar to the RRE setup except i will be using a muffler instead of two resonators. I'll keep everyone posted on the progress and hopefully will have sound clips to follow. Stay tuned!

Mike

the 5/8/14 mag muffler is very nice quiet muffler by itself. no resonator needed. And it gets more quiet with age. its a tanker in the weight department, but worth the tax if you ask me.

Looks like that is an offset muffler.

The N1 style resonator is pretty large and keeps my Apexi N1 exhaust pretty quiet. You will be happy with results.

Thank you all for the input and feedback. I took a risk with a shorter oval muffler length compared to that in the RRE system b/c of my jdm rear bumper and angle of the existing piping in the rear section.

I run an HKS carbon-Ti with a test pipe, 3" dp, and unresonated test pipe and i am very pleased at how quiet it is even at WOT. Sounds excellent also...

Would you say the same with your engine's speed at 4500 rpm and traveling at a constant velocity?

Im actually thinking of the same thing..

Im getting over how loud my car is, so Im just looking for a sweet note. Im going to place a VBand flange in front of the magnaflow rear muffler so I can drop it at the track and replace it with a 3" pipe.. Should save some weight and free up the exhaust slightly.

I already have VBand flanges on my 100cell cat so I can drop that in 5 mins and replace with a test pipe at the track.

That means my street exhaust is this;

-JSpeed Front Pipe
-3" pipe work
-100cell Cat
-Resonator
-Magnaflow Muffer

and my race exhaust is

-JSpeed front pipe
-3" pipework
-Test Pipe
-Centre resonator

THATS it!

Considering im going 4" straight pipe no resinator just a vibrant muffler, what you consider "quiet" and what someone else considers "quiet" can be a big difference. With that said i would say just put in two resinators and a single muffler, a straight through muffler will be better for performance but a chamber muffler will be "quieter"

I agree, quiet is purely subjective. I think the droning bothers me more than the loudness. I hate having to speak over the tone of the exhaust when i am trying to hold a conversation with my passengers. I would much rather speak at a normal level than to have to raise my voice. Besides, i think it's a bit juvenile to have a "loud" exhaust and not to mention it is a nuisance to the neighbors.
