Engine Problems

Hi everyone,

Ok so I just bought an 2003 EVO 8. I drove it around for a couple days, then one day that I took it to work it drove fine. I went to start it up when I got off and it sounded funny. Proceeded to drive it and it had barely any power. I got it home and pulled the turbo off and put the stock one back on because I thought i blew the seals from all the oil in the headers. Nope. I had it taken to the shop and they did a compression test and it had 95% compression, which is really good. They also changed the plugs because of how black they were and they were like for cars with a lot of horsepower. I then had it checked for a boost leak and its had a small crack in the intercooler. I got it tig welded and tried to pressure test it myself and I couldn't hear any air coming from the crack area. I put the intercooler back on and same results. Still smoking slightly and cant barely get it to leave in first gear. As soon as i push in the clutch it wants to die. There is oil bubling out of a very small crack in the headers.

I am going to take the intercooler to get tested tomorrow at a shop. Any other suggestions on what could be going wrong or what I should try next? Could the timing have jumped?

well if you are getting unusually large amounts of oil in the "header" then that means your engine is consuming oil. I would do a leak down test, see how much compression is being bled off. I would then redo a compression test and see what PSI the engine is at.

what does "sounded funny" mean? describe the sound in as much detail as possible or video tape it and put it on youtube then link that vid here

the leakdown test showed 95 percent in each cylinder. I guess they never performed the compression test because they said the leakdown test was good. The car sounds louder than normal and has a rhough and uneven idle right when you start it up. It never used to do this. Also the car starts up fine the first time but when I proceed to drive it, it stalls. I then start it up again and it doesn't want to stay on. I have to hold the gas in for a while then ease off before it hols at 900 rpm. Then as soon as i push the clutch in, it dies. I just cant figure out what would cause oil to run out of the manifold.

How many miles are on this engine? What kind of mods have you done and what kind of boost were you running?

The car has 87,000 miles. I bought it a couple weeks ago. I took the valve cover off and it has HKS cams and ARP studs. The guy said it had a built bottom end and judging by the other mods i dont doubt it. It has perrin fuel rail, rc 1000 cc injectors, perrin front mount, koyo radiator, AEM ignition box, AEM EVC. It had a FP turbo on it andi thought i blew it so i put a stock one it. 15 psi

I recomend redoing the compression and leak down tests. 95% of what number? The first thing your "shop" should have done was a compression test, you need to be in the 140-160psi for a good/great engine, and they all need to be withing IMO 10-20psi of each other.

after you do that, you should do a leak down test, you shouldnt leak all the compression very fast, should be fairly slow. You could have good compression but still have a leaking compression issue. I know the because when I first got my old evo, it had bent valves (not majorly bent, but bent none the less) It showed good compression during compression tests, but would leak all the compression fast during a leak down.

After that, do a pressure test of the intake track. Do you have a VTA (vent to atmosphere) blow off valve? if the car is tuned for the FP red, put that back on the car.

Yeah i think your right. I think the problem is that its getting to much fuel due to the tune for the FP red. I am buying a EMS tonight so hopefully that takes care of the problem. The car seems to chug when i give it gas. I think what I thought was oil coming from the headers is actually fuel mixed with the carbon from the manifold. The FP needs rebuilt so I am going to sell it. I am buying a whole kit from tab fabrication here in town which uses the 35r and vband set up. Thanks for your help.
