How rare are Shep Drivetrain failures?

Hey guys I was just wondering if Shep drivetrains are practically bulletproof? I'm thinking ahead of myself, but in the future I want to upgrade the T-Case, I have a 2004 RS.

Thanks

nothing is bullet proof my friend!

Shep's trannies are some of the best units money can buy and can take A LOT of abuse!!!

i first did mine at around 9500 miles... on a launch once i managed to break one of my axles but nothing happened to my tranny!!!

Now at 22,000 i pulled the gearbox again for a freshening up since the first build and during these 12,000 they have seen around 370awhp for 5K miles, 430awhp for another 5K miles and close to 600awhp for the last 2K miles revving and shifting at 9000rpm...

Shepherd is KING!

I agree with the above mentioned...when a shepard tranny failes, you tend to see it up on the boards....so although not impossible it is rare.

I havn't heard of any...I have seen TRE's have ot be rebuilt (That might've been the user). They are are best chance to not break them but anything can happen. I'm sure after a crap ton of clutch drops if your clutch and axle are still alive your tcase may need to be refreshed but you'd have to be doing it all the time for a long time...Shep builds trannies for alot of people who drag and road race professionally.

depends how big of an idiot is behind the wheel........same goes for stock drive-train parts.

anything can be destroyed as you cant make it idiot proof - but its never the persons fault.

Never hurts to beef up the trans, but you have an RS so your transfer case is already pretty stout.

30k miles and 150+ launches on the Shep t-case, No problems! Change the fluid every 10k or 12 months and you should be good!

Nothing is "Bulletproof", but shep does awesome work. Very intelligent and upfront. I like TRE too. he does a nice job, and he really knows his ****.

As long as its driven properly then it will last and stand up to some pretty heavy abuse.

As was mentioned, poor driving habits...i.e., clutch drops, thinking your cool by throwing the car in reverse then slamming it into 1st gear to do an awd burnout, etc, etc, will destroy your parts with ease.

For TC purposes, the weak link will be the FR diff if using Mits.... When I spoke to John Shep he told me with stock Mits LSD they have only experienced a few breaking upwards of 500whp.... and I'm sure that is a case by case bases....
Go with a quaife and you probably have the most bullet proof TC your can get.
