Opinions on rods and pistons?

Can Eagle rods and Wiesco pistons handle an FP Black Cams with 92 oct + Meth? Your opinions would be helpful on my next move.

Thanks

sure, but for how long??? not worth it IMO, spend the extra dough for some good rods, dont risk a 4K motor and maybe head

wow really? how many miles do those cars have with the set-up? I know one is yours(35R) and the other is Johnny's(Black), I know that the rods might handle more than their fame says but they start to fail when you start reving the motor pretty high and have some good abuse on them, am I correct?

Actually neither are mine

One is Johnny's and has only been at that level recently but has been 500+ for awhile. The other is Big Jesse (Chuy) and his over 11k on it so far. It gets raced frequently, runs Q16 alot, and really doesnt do much other than what it is intended for. On pump the car makes about what I did on my 2.0, around 580whp/425 ft lbs at 29psi/92 octane.

Has anyone broken an eagle rod since they went to the new rod bolts?? They are rated at 1000 hp now and are some of the lightest steel rods you can get. Seems kind of high but we have never had an issue with them since the changes.

One meticulous builder I know RH tests each one (when a customer provides them), and quite a few end up in the trash. In other words, at least some wouldn't meet the 4340 specification. Others are incorrectly sized/machined on these shores, and scores of them (a BMW application) had to be returned just recently for that reason.

I'd never use any cheap (Chinese) rod in an otherwise expensive engine, but that's just me. The shortcomings of cheap foreign steel are well documented.

FYI

i have ross pistons and oliver rods. with a black at nearly 580 awhp. i get on it very frequently and have several thousand miles on it. ive had no problems. i beleive the oliver rods are domestic made and are more costly.

Ted, I completely understand and agree. I dont happen to have seen a rod fail in service yet and we have them checked at the machine shop. I dont have them Rockwelled, but the ends are checked with the bearing clearances. So far not more than .0002 difference on any of them.

I dont push steel rod motors. If its something that is going to be really turned up, aluminum is the way to go. I am starting to test some of the GSC rods to see what they can do, I am sure they will be fine.

Cheap rods are...cheaply made. There are some that are better than others. Not all rods are like Eagle, etc. Try the K1 rods if your budget doesn't allow Carrillo, Crower, Pauter, etc. AMS ran these rods (and their crank) on their EVO 8 time attack car for a long time with zero issues. K1 also inspects/finishes their rods here in the US so your chance of receiving complete junk is very small.

Pistons: JE, Wiseco or the new SRP Professional pistons by JE

The SRP Professional piston are perfect for the 600hp and below street/strip car. They are quiet (due to 4032 alloy and skirt coating), have a special undercrown design that is thicker in the middle for turbo engines and uses good steel nitrided rings. Nils new Time Attack engine has them inside.
