Why dont people use what the 3 biggest EVO tranny guys recommend??

because back in 04 and 05 thats all Shep and TRE knew about, thats what worked for them so why would they change, they havent tried any of the fluids that claim to be superior to redline, or at least i talked to John (Shep) and he has not tried AMSOIL,, i dont think Jack was around or at least i dont recall him being here on the farums back then.

I talked to all 3 of them this year and they still recommend MT-90 in the trans and OEM in the TC and rear diff.

I guess its like you said, it works, so why change.

And not to hate on you, but Ill use what the 3 big tranny builders say to use, not just some marketing guy, no offense.

And I use Pennzoil Syncromesh in mine which was reccomended to me by TRE years back. I stick to a strict 6-10k change interval and my stock 120k+ trans shifts like butter to this day

Thought about trying AMSoil but I'm not changing from what works wonders for me especially to something much much more expensive which I can't just pick up at the store.

Oh and Diaqueen in the 120k+ mile STOCK TC and rear diff too.

Can someone tell me what is the main difference in manual transmission fluid and gear oil?

The bottles both says 75-90 weight.

well here is the deal,,, that that marketing guy happens to be a chemist engineer that spends most of his time finding out ways to improve oil.

i like to base my facts on engineering/scientific proof and the most important one is real life experiences, so that being said cars like AWD motorposrts that are running faster times that you and me will ever run and DO NOT USE OEM they use AMSOIL Racing Gear Lube 250, and ther must be over 600 cars here on evom drag racing , running time attack events that are using the AMSOIL SVG 75w90 and loving it,,,, just comes to prove that ther are better fluids than OEM and RL out there

I had redline for exactly 1 winter in the evo (and was quite dubious as it was in my 6-bolt DSM with questionable results... but its easy to find around here).

Wont go back. cold weather performance was this good:


Put in Amsoil and it shifts perfect in cold, hot, zero gravity and even the vacume of space.

Note: space reference made for illustration purposes only.

^^ is correct..Shep uses Redline and hasn't changed because he doesn't know what Amsoil has to offer..However, if it ain't broke why fix it???

because for me..... it WAS broken.

I dont care about having a car that can make a 1/4 drag race a few dozen times per year with frequent re-builds and the skill to rebuild it myself.

I expect my transmission to operate smoothly every day, regardless of weather (fireballs dropping from the sky or global flooding being the rare exceptions) 15,000 miles per year, for 5-7 years without rebuild, plus handle a few track days per year.

If shifting in the cold makes 1st, 2nd and Reverse essentially locked out and having to rock the car to get it into gear...... well then my friend, you believe the Redline fluid is working far better than I do. Because my un-educated experience is that if the gear notchy and grinding feelings through the shifter getting into gear, my brain interprets this as not working properly.

All evo trannies will be notchy when very cold. Even the AMSOIL guy in this thread agrees. No trans oil I have tried so far has changed that.

I just switched from factory trans fluid to redline. Never seen blueish fluid before. So far its noticeably better. I will see how it acts when it gets colder outside. I'm going to try amsoil next to compare it to redline.

there is a point of acceptability. and personally its unnacceptable to be locked out of a gear whenever it gets below 32 degrees.

Had to warm the car up in the garage for 15 minutes just to be able to rock it back and forth enough to get Reverse engaged.

Note: In seattle it was 32 degrees, no snow, mildly damp ground and no noticable wind chill. If you lived in the mid-west where you get sevear winters i'd hate to be on Redline!
