Something that concerns me with the column assist is that the rack was never really meant to deal with the torque load on the input shaft. Probably not a huge concern for typical steering input but in the event of steering kick back, the column assist will likely produce some huge torque on the rack input shaft.

BMW uses the column assist on the Z4. I've got the rack out of one as it fits the E36, has a quicker ratio and is a manual rack. The input shaft is several mm larger in diameter than the standard E36 rack. It is obviously something that drove a design change to the rack.
