Super AVC-R

Ok.. I haven't seen anyone mention the Apexi Super AVC-R (Their boost controller unit) or even that its been used on this car. I recently found a price that I couldn't resist on one and picked it up.

Whats the good/bad/ugly on this thing?

Also, anyone have any good settings (It also reads in BAR which confuses the hell out of me)

I got it for two reasons.. It seems to have alot of control features that I was looking for (plus I can monitor the fuel injector duty cycle) and it matches my S-AFC (not the S-AFC-II)

I normally make my decisions based on research, but there's isn't alot of info out there on EBC Comparisons. Most EBC's out there seem to have a set it and forget it setup similar to the MBC's this one seems to be different (I know there are others out there, but the price was right)

So.. Whatcha think?

The scoop that I know is that the AVCR is a pretty advanced EBC compaired to others. Even though tuned right it can put out just as consistant as the others but the settings are a little more advanced to make use of the controler as a whole. Read up on it and you will be fine. A bar chart is below so you can use it for a reference.

PSI - BAR - Kpa - mmHg - kg/cm.sq

1.45 - 0.1 - 10 - 75.01 - 0.102
2.90 - 0.2 - 20 - 150.02 - 0.204
4.35 - 0.3 - 30 - 225.03 - 0.306
5.80 - 0.4 - 40 - 300.04 - 0.408
7.25 - 0.5 - 50 - 375.05 - 0.51
8.70 - 0.6 - 60 - 450.06 - 0.612
10.15 - 0.7 - 70 - 525.07 - 0.714
11.61 - 0.8 - 80 - 600.08 - 0.816
13.06 - 0.9 - 90 - 675.09 - 0.918
14.51 - 1 - 100 - 750.1 - 1.02

I'm in the same boat you're on. I also bought the avc-r even though It does seem to be a very complex unit. I should have mine installed sometime this week. I'll post some feed back once i have it dialed in.

Well, the July 2002 issue of Sport Compact Car had a test of 7 boost controllers and the AVC-R was one of them. It got good marks but they were not happy with the degree of complexity for adjusting it...
From the article of SCC, July '02 " Out of the box the AVC-R worked fine in our Eclipse. Boost response was good, but as we tried for more, things got a little weird. getting the most out ofthis unit takes either lucky guessing or real tuning time. First you set the boost, then duty, Ne-point, F/B, speed.... While the AVC-R is supposed to tune itself, it seems the brunt of the work is on your shoulders. If you like to fiddle with things, you'll be in heaven."
FWIW, the best controller in their opinion was the Blitz SBC i-D; But they really ended up saying that the "cheap ball valve" (manual boost controller) was practically as good as any of the others at holding boost at a pre-set level....
Hope this helps

I have the AVC-R in my evo and love it. Have nothing but good comments about it. It may seem complex at first but once you get it down it is quite simple, and user friendly.

Excellent replies guys, this was exactly what I was looking for. Originally this unit was priced way higher than anything else out there (for the most part)

FYI, I do already have an MBC, and its AMAZING, however there are several things that led me down the path of the AVC-R

1) Boost levels change with severe weather changes, an MBC cannot compensate for that, and many EBC's can't either unless their closed loop.

2) I was getting varying levels of spiking when upshifting and downshifting (once it spiked to 25psi when downshifting to pass someone and it freaked me out) Therefore I like the gear based settings.

3) It matches the S-AFC (ok a little bling can't hurt)(eek! Did I say Bling????)

4) It has instrumentation on it that will also aid in tuning the vehicle (Injector Duty Cycle)

5) It has RPM based boost control, 2 settings, and you can deactivate the boost altogether (which drops it to the factory wastegate setting of about 10psi good for gas mileage)

6) Scramble boost (Nuff said, having a little GO button is just groovy)

Etc.. It took me a long time to ultimately decide on this over the Blitz or Profec-Bspec2. I really liked the Profec-E but its got a huge ugly display, and its features aren't all that different than the ApexI except for its ability to control the EManage.

And for me, as an experienced tuner, I find the settings (in the manual and what I've read) to be more to my liking and not all that difficult to make sense of.

Since its completely closed loop, with true feedback control, It looks like it can solve my boost spiking issues. I will finally be able to determine if the dropoff is due to my Diverter Valve (which I plan on changing too)

Thanks guys! Especially for the Bar to PSI Conversion chart.. What a pain to change a way of thinking...

i also have the avc-r and i don't think it is overly complex. basically all you need to do is pick a boost and a duty cycle that gets you the boost you want. then you can fine tune things like start duty so you get more consistent boost and desired spool up characteristics in each gear. the avc-r will also automatically learn the duty cycle necessary to maintain a given boost pressure. imo it's a great unit

Wow this is an older thread that got bumped recently.. For what its worth I had the AVC-R installed for a very short period of time..I ended up replacing the S-AFC and S-AVCR with a TurboXS UTEC. So unless you guys need tuning information, I won't be adding anything new to the Apexi tuning stuff.

I didn't want to make another thread since I found this but can anyone suggest a duty cycle for boost set at 1.45.

I'm still learning how to ecuflash. I don't have a wideband yet and the avc r is already installed.
