Gates Timing Belt issue

Hey All,

I have searched and found multiple owners having difficulties with this belt. I too purchased the Gates kit from MitsubishiParts.net and am in no way putting their service down. They had prompt shipping and no problems on the purchasing side. However, when the belt was installed, along with the other 60k parts that comes in their package, my engine started making noises. I thought that the oil pump had gone out. When Jack's Transmission took a look, they tried 3 different kevlar belts and the same thing was happening (the noise that is). When they put on an OEM belt, it completely stopped. $400 on top of what I paid for the parts and another $250 for the initial installation (which brings the total to a whopping $1200 just for a 60k service!

I was wondering if anyone had any luck getting refunds for the belt?

I've read similar stories about that belt, odd noises and such.

Do you have balance shaft removal? Or any other engine work done? Or engine is stock?

I have BC 272's, but I don't know if that is a factor.

It's a known fact that the Gates Belts are a little noisy. Mine make noise when cold and still kinda makes noise even when warm. It's very annoying, but they say it's normal due to the material's used and rigidity of belt.

OEM ftw, unless you making crazy power kevlar belts are waste of money IMO

That's weird cuz Jack's was telling me about how loose it was and can cause future problems. whatever though, a $500 lesson learned.

if its too loose too it will have noise issues too. we have fixed a few oe and aftermarket belts where people have tensioned them wrong and made crazy noises.

I suspect the devil is in the details. I don't think it was installed properly. I would think given the material differance in the Gates belt as aposed to the stock one, they would have to be tightend differently.
