2WD evo mod for better mileage

My friend has an explorer and he installed a switch that turns the 4WD off and puts it into 2WD mode since it gets better mileage on long highway trips in 2WD mode.

Does anybody know if this mod is possible on the evo?

Most RWD cars are 60% weight in front 40% weight in back. Also the best handling cars in the world follow that weight distribution which are INDY cars.

why not, if it'll get me an extra 5mpg? I'd only put it into 2WD for long highway trips... it'd be a great mod for the price of a switch and some wire...

It is possible but the cost will make you think twice. We are talking BIG $$$$$ so just get a Toyota Prius as a second car.

From what I understand, you would have to disconnect the driveshaft to the rear so you'd have a FWD car.

Regardless, posts like these are silly and impractical.

No Explorers are full time 4wd. They come stock with a switch that engages 4WD when you need it.

Your car is AWD, only 4wd when it needs to be. There is no cost effective solution, especially one for handling purposes. And your more than welcome to unbolt one of the driveshafts, just make sure you have a big tarp underneath your car to catch the parts.

Check out the RWD dsms...fast, but not streetable.

Actually, Explorers equipped with Control Trac 4wd do have an automatic mode and an electronically controlled clutch (kind of like ACD) that diverts power to the front axle automatically when wheel slippage is controlled. This is good for inclement weather but has no handling benefit. The evo's VCD allows for seamless and immediate power transfer which DOES have an immense handling benefit. However, due to its purely mechanical nature, and the nature of VCD's in general, there's no way to 'rig' it to disengage. I'd imagine that parasitic losses from the rear diff and halfshafts spinning would reduce the economy gained by disengaging the rear driveshaft.

You have it exactly...backwards Ideal weight distribution is 45f/55r to about 40f/60r. This is for a dry high grip surface, as grip lowers ideal weight distribution shifts forward FWIW (to combat excessive oversteer)
