when I took the stock airbox off and just put an airfitler on the stock intake tube the turbo got 5x louder than how it was before. Do you hear the turbo spool or a whine? does it pull just as hard as it did before?

 

sounds like a boost leak, More air is getting metered than is entering the engine, hence the rich condition and probly some amount of the noise.

 

if it sounds like an abnormal whining/sucking when in boost, id recheck the intercooler piping. mine did that when it popped off
