o2 housing install question

When installing an O2 housing all the how to's say you need to count the revolutions the o2 sensor does when you unscrew it so you can do that many when you put it back in. The question I have is what does this do? A couple of the how to's say its so the wire is not twisted, most of them do not mention why.

Now I have not seen how difficult it may be, but wouldn't it be possible to disconnect the o2 sensor plug and not worry about the number of rotations it takes to remove it? Or do the number of rotations have another effect like how far in it goes, or the final orientation of the plug inside the o2 housing?

Thanks for any assistance.

Yep just disconnect the O2 sensor from the connection under the spark plug cover. No need to coun the revolutions. Tighten it back up when your done.

If you unplug it then you dont need to worry about it.

You just rotate it a little counterclockwise before installing so it isn't all twisted, no mechanical reason for it.

counting the number of revolutions is the dumbest thing ive ever heard... just unscrew it and screw it back in... If its in your stock 02 housing and has never come out, good luck getting it out lol

Counting the revolutions isn't going to help you at all. Just disconnect the sensor and thread it in until tight.

hah sweet, thanks guys. I was hoping there was no sane reason to count the revs. Seems like a pain.

And yeah its coming out of the stocker lol. At least I don't DD the car so often nowadays so I can leave all its bolts and the exhaust manifold soaking in pb blaster heh.

Meh, big long breaker bar with an O2 socket and it will come out.

my advice,
Install the o2 sensor before bolting the housing to the turbocharger.

As long as he has a vice to torque down the O2 agreed. If not, it helps to have it bolted up first.

Definitely install the o2 sensor in the housing while outside the car first. Forget about all that counting crap. Pop off your spark plug cover and I believe 2 10mm bolts hold down the connector for the o2 sensor unless you are able to slide it off the metal bracket.
