Worth Putting Cams in a 06MR
Worth Putting Cams in a 06MR
Ok this might be a dumb question but I am starting to mod my 06 MR. I have herd that the 06 since it has mivec wont benefit much from a set of 272s? Is this right? My car as 63K on it and im getting ready to do the T-belt and this would be a great time for cams lol. Thanks

Depends on your goals. If you plan on only doing bolt ons then it may not be worth it. If you plan to at least go with a bigger stock frame turbo then yes.
Some cams make better power then others. Kelfords make a lot more power on the VIII's then the IX's. They are no slouch (I have them) but a friend of mine has FP4R's and if I had to do it all over again I would do those or ER GSC S2's.

If you swap the turbo then upgrading the cams will be worth it. I gained around 15whp and 20tq from swapping into a set of HKS 272s and dialing them in with an adjustable cam gear on the new 2.1L. It was a small gain, but it helps the motor breathe better leading to some mild to decent gains.
outline the goals for the car and what you want to do with it.
What other mods are already on the car?
Do you have things such as
Turbo Back Exhaust
Boost controller
upgraded intercooler
lower intercooler pipe
custom tune
adding cams to the mix with a custom tune will still net some good gains but I wouldn't do 272's, go with gsc 2's or kelford 280's
you can also add things such as ported stock intake manifold, ported exhaust manifold or sheet metal intake.
the sheet metal intake will net you more horsepower in the mid to upper rpms however you will lose a bit of spool and low end power. which kinda off sets the other upgrades with the tune.
I ran a sheet metal intake and it nettd me about 40+ whp in the mid to upper range. and I was pleased with that because the motor was already quick n response.
I mean those are the basics an with those you are really going to put down some decent #'s. know if you wanna make your car faster and keep it stock appearing, start getting weight out of the car!
lighter rims
lighter flywheel
AMS makes a bunch of parts that reduce overall mass.....
take out the back seat if unused and make a nice basic cover for it.
AMS Carbon Fiber Roof - add some bling, lol and take out some weight.
etc. etc.
I mean if you can reduce your cars weight by 200-300 or more lbs. and have the base mods your gonna have a quick n well balanced car.
I will say this again, when I buy another evo the first mods I will do are the following:
Weight Reduction
Weight Reduction
Weight Reduction
2.3 Stroker motor with stock 9 turbo
I want as fast of a spooling car with as much torque as it can handle all the while being light weight without being all hacked up...

i run the GSC S1's on my stock turbo'd 9 and they rip **** on the street...I might go to a red in a year or so, or even the bbk full, but i'd say for driveability these GSCs are unreal
thanks everyone for the input, it has (this weekend) tbe, it has on it now injen uicp, injen intake forge mbc and as soon as i decide on the cams a custom tune. Next is brakes and suspension i just got the car 2 weeks ago lol.

If you do a turbo upgrade and a good tune, cam upgrade could be beneficial. Remember, even if you only gain 20-30 whp or just a little torque, if you have that gain over most of your powerband it is worth it. A quick spool up with sustained power till redline is a feeling you will never forget.
