Engine done?

I'm thinking about buying an evo off of a friend for cheap but I'd like some opinions on what happened to the engine before I do anything. He said that he was driving down the road and heard a loud bang, followed by a black cloud of smoke and the engine started leaking oil really badly and then it cutoff. He hasn't started it since. I looked at the oil pan and it looked fine.

I'm not sure exactly where the oil is coming from but I'm thinking the turbo because he recently had a shop(not a performance shop) do some work on the turbo and I could see them not knowing what they were doing. He drove it home from the shop and the next day drove it for around 20mins before it did this.

it could be alot of things...why not just get under the car and see where the oil is coming from? if it is that much oil, it shouldn't be to hard to see

Yeah, I'm going to tomorrow after work. I just didn't know if anyone else had experienced the problem before. I'm thinking if it's not coming out of the oil pan then it probably has to do with the turbo. I'd imagine it'd be nearly impossible to crack the block with minimal mods. Maybe the oil pump???

I actually just got back from checking it out...finally. I've been busy with school and work.

Anyway, I don't think it's a hole in the block atleast I hope not. The oil is coming from the back left side of the engine and I think it might be the intake manifold or head gasket. The underside of the intake manifold was caked in oil and it was down the whole left side of the block(if you're looking at it from the front).

I think the cutting off might have been the ecu relearning itself because he had been running it without the a/c hooked up for atleast a year, had it flashed I believe and decided to put it back on and while he was running it the car cut off a couple of times prior to it blowing up that day.

Sorry if this sounds jumbled. I'm a little tired.

This is possible. I didn't read this prior to me going to look at it today but that line goes up under the left side of the block, like under the transmission oil pan right? If it's the one I'm thinking of it was covered in oil.

Well, a little update for any of you interested.

I got the car home today and while we were towing it, it started leaking oil so I took the opportunity to find out where it was coming from. I started feeling between the oil pan and the downpipe. Well, turns out it seems as though a rod as gone through the oil pan and lodged itself between the oil pan and downpipe. Atleast, that's the only thing I could think of. I haven't tried to turn it over yet though. I'll start tearing it down tomorrow.
