Lightbulb Problem: Steering hard at low speeds binds up and stops car. Grey puopon stuff splatt

Just got back from an AutoX last sunday. Couple days ago, I noticed something was binding up and causing the car to need a little more gas to get off of a stop. It didnt like to roll back sometimes (whereas pervisouly at a stop letting off the brake would cause it to roll back.)

It got really bad yesterday when i was driving. When i would crank the wheel it would bind up and not even let me turn it anymore. It would also cause the car to stop. I had to force it a couple times to get into a parking spot, when i did, I also had to give it a lot of gas to get it moving and i would hear a big loud pop like a gunshot and it would free up.

Just jacked it up. I see some grey poupon looking stuff around the cv joint all over the place it looks kind of yellowish green and its sludgey. A little around where the axle meets the tranny also. It doesnt smell stinky like the amsoil tranny fluid i just put in two weeks ago. It is oily tho.

I thought it was the cv joint binding up and then when i forced it, it put the axle shaft at a funny angle and probably took out the tranny seals. I had to drive it a bit today and the tranny didnt seize up or anything. morbid.

Could it just be grease from the cv joint? the boot looked in tact but I will scope out things a little better. I will take some pics in a few minutes and post.

Any ideas / input?

What is this grey poupon stuff all over the place?? its really thick.. looks like diahreeah!! And if my trasfer case is on the otherside why does this stuff look like its comeing from my tranny? I dont have any money and this is my daily driver. I had a fund saved for fixing things - it went to my new clutch last month hahaha. I am a pizza delivery driver and i live 3 thousand miles away from my family =) So... how much damage is it going to cause driving it around? I can keep the sharp turns down but they are still going to happen.

She replaced the bearings and seals and refilled the diff. With the binding issue, im also going to add the tore up spider gears in the front diff located in the transfer case. Too bad i spent all my money on the clutch / flywheel replacement last month haha.
Evo might have to get sold.. too many financial obligations adding up. The evo is falling in priority. stupid economy.

It sounds like the same thing that happened with my old tcase, the spider gears start to bind and the wheel fights you back. If you keep driving it you actually risk killing your tranny as the fluids inter-mix per JON@ TRE and will take that out. Right now your only option is to take the t case off and buy as new one as i would bet that the one on there the diff carrier will almost be seized shut like mine was. There is a guy on this board that might by the tcase housing off of you thou so you can make some money to speed along your cars recovery. Look for Neonglh and PM him. drain the fluids in both your tranny and tcase and look for metallic chunks in there, hopefully there isnt any but you never know.... good luck and if you ave any questions PM me, i was in your shoes a few months ago

Hey I appreciate the info. Yup that intermixing fluid expllins aaeverything.
So why r they mixing? Are the. Seals damaged that are in between the tcase and tranny? Is the transfercase not rebiildable? It's. Only 250 for a rbuild from shep. U think its just a brick? I drained ad refilled my tranny fluid 3 weeks ago after o got locked out of 2nd drag racing. I grinded the **** out of 2nd. I saved the fluid so I. Could run it thru a cofee filter. I xpected to find some bits. Havnt strained it yet.

yikes you bought an evo and you deliver pizza???!?!? sorry my jaw just dropped after reading that.....

your gonna have a tough time draining diaqueen through a coffee filter, its quite a heavy oil. i wouldnt be surprised if it takes you like a a day or two even haha. if you want to try to catch gear bits, maybe a metal strainer would do

no the seals arnt damaged, its just the way it was designed per mitsu. dont make sense to me as i use two different fluids in my t case and my tranny but i think im a tad above your power level. i would plan on a new ring and pinion with this rebuild though, when mine was doing this my ring had 12 cracks in it. I know shep replaces the ring and pinion but i dont know what it will run you. if it end up being a more expensive build then you imagined i would honestly just but a built one. it will be pricey up front but it will take damn near anything you can throw at it
