Radiator overflow question

I just washed my evo and washed some of the motor off where oil was spilt. Now I looked into the overflow tank and it was on the low line, I started the car up and about 5-8min later it started to rise and smelled a little like antifreeze. Is this normal? I may just have fear of something is wrong because of Rx-7’s and the coolant problems they have had in the past.

Perfectly normal. This is the reason we have an overflow tank, as the coolant heats up it expands and flows into the overflow tank. When you shut off the engine and the coolant gets colder it contracts and is sucked back into the radiator.

Okay that's what I was thinking but I had it a little to full when it was cold and it overflowed a little and that smell causes me to freak out because it did the same thing when my Rx-7 blew up. lol
