Heres what I've found with Tranny Oil
For my tranny, every gear rocks except for 2nd. It never wants to play along and slide right in. So I've been on the hunt for a good oil which may make it a little easier shifting out of first.
I've tried the following tranny oils WITHOUT success:
BG Syncroshift II (synthetic)
- Didnt feel any better than OEM fluid. Notchiness was still there, and 2nd gear would never easily go in. Downshifting while rev matching was ok, but still very notchy.
Redline MT-90
- Felt worse than BG II. I would feel like I was raping 2nd gear, or the 2nd gear syncros on every shift. I varied shifting style, everything I could think of to make 2nd gear happy, but nothing would work. Downshifting while rev matching sucked too. I really think this was the worst tranny oil ever. You have to rev match PERFECTLY for the box to feel smooth.
Finally I tried regular ol' BG Syncroshift I. Its non-synthetic. Tranny now shifts like butter. You can shift fast into 2nd, and it always goes in, or you can just slide it up against the gates and the syncros will just guide you into 2nd gear.
For those having trouble with the ****ty 2nd gear, give BG Syncroshift a try.

I forget what BG stands for. If you look around, it seems like several DSM shops like it too. RRE, Mach V, etc. My Mitsu Dealer has a few cool techs that own 400hp DSMs. They recommended BG to me.

I switched from BG II to Shell Helix... I grinded once with BG, but fairly good results. It did feel allittle notchy but a huge improvement over stock. The Helix is very nice...I slammed 1-2 the other day and spun the tires. Works awesome, after a nice warmup on a 35 degree weather it also feels like butter. Its cost prohibitive at $75 a quart. Same oil used in Ferrari transmissions, only the best! No smell, almost transparent.

every dealership I have been around/worked at, uses BG. Ford to Benz, and Mitsu to Nissan. They provide decarb kits, injection cleaning kits, oils, power steering flush etc. BG is usually used over OE stuff as far as system cleaners.

Yea...Al uses it also. Ferrarokid on the board does work on the side (He's a Ferrari/Maserati tech) and he presuaded me to use the helix. He also built Al's engine. They buy it in 5 Gallon drums for $350.

Mine was rough in second too. But with 5K on it now it has moved to the "butter" catagory. I changed to MT-90 at 2K and didn't notice a big difference then, except in cold. Maybe the tranny parts just need to get aquainted with time and then they get smoother, regardless of the fluid? Just a thought...

Has anyone tried Mobil 1 gear oil? I went to RMR yesterday, and asked for some tranny fluid recommendation. They suggested Mobil 1 since all of their cars (including the SCCA rally cars) are using this fluid.
